SALLISAW â€” Several local wrestlers placed in the Paul Post Tournament, which took place Friday and Saturday.
Poteauâ€™s Tyler Tustin won the tournament for the third straight year, claiming the 138-pound title. He also was named the tournamentâ€™s Most Oustanding Wrestler.
Poteauâ€™s Devin Anderson (120 pounds) and Derek Francis (170) were runners-up, both losing in the finals.
Poteauâ€™s Gabe Sanchez (195 pounds) and Daylon Brewton (heavyweight) won consolation titles, both winning their consolation finals match by pin.
TAHLEQUAH â€” The Poteau Pirates junior high wrestling team won the Tahlequah Tournament, which took place last weekend. The Pirates edged the Muskogee Roughers by a point to win the team title.
Bryson Terry, Race Williams, Ross Johnson, Sam Shore and Roderick Hornbuckle all went undefeated. Rae Hendrix and Conner Williams placed second, while Landon Daily finished third.
The Poteau Pirates and Lady Pirates had a great homecoming celebration as they won both ends of the doubleheader against Sallisaw on Friday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
The Pirates opened the night with a 61-44 rout of the Black Diamonds, then the Lady Pirates capped the evening with a 58-38 victory over the Lady Black Diamonds.
While I was gearing up this past weekend for the 81st LeFlore County Tournament, the state's longest-running basketball tournament, being the baseball fan I am, it was a sorrowful one for me in that regard.

Betty Jo Stricklin, 75, of Poteau died Saturday, Jan. 19, in Poteau. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Trinity Baptist Church, Heavener. Burial wil be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Heavener, under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home.
Hiahwahnah â€śDickieâ€ť Neal, 67, of Talihina, died Sunday, Jan, 20, 2013 in Little Rock, Ark. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m.Â Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Choctaw Military Cemetery at Tuskahoma with Charlie Scott officiating. Talihina Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Petra Renate Margot Cox, 54, of Pocola died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, in Pocola. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Evans Memorial Chapel in Pocola with John Burns officiating. Evans and Miller Funeral Home in Pocola is handling arrangements.
Lana Frances Hinson, 64, of Mena, Ark., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, in Mena. Lana was born Aug. 8, 1948, in Hackett, Ark., to John and Bertha (Weaver) Prater. She worked at Whirlpool. Lana was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, George Prater.Â
Survivors include her husband, Bobby of the home; sons, Billy Ray Hinson and Wayne Hinson of Poteau; five grandchildren; sister, Mary Russell and husband Paul of Norman; brothers, Norman Prater and wife Dorthy of Norman, Claude Prater and wife Linda of Stratford; other relatives and loved ones.
Nova Armstrong, 93, of Poteau died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, in Poteau. Nova was born Jan. 6, 1920 in Belzoni to Robert Lee and Maudie (Goforth) Goodin. Nova was a seamstress for more than 40 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Armstrong; sons, Gary and Clarence; seven sister, and five brothers.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Dale Barnes of Sallisaw, Ernestine and Floyd Morris of Poteau; son, Don Armstrong of Poteau; sister, Ila Redifer; 11 grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; other relatives and loved ones.
