Golf brought Hartford teen, dad closer together before his death

October 25, 2012

In her father's eyes, Lauren Grace Ford of Hartford, Ark., has always been a star. Her father introduced Lauren to many sports from T-ball to basketball, which are just two ways Gary Ford found time to spend with his daughter.
Gary was always by her side, coaching her each step of the way, but the greens of the fairway and Lauren's love for golf brought this father-daughter duo even closer. As proud mom, Sharon Ford stood back and watched and cheered. Lauren ,with the help of her daddy, learned to dominate the course.

An eggs-tremely fun time at 2012 BalloonFest

October 25, 2012

I would like to thank everyone who came out to the 2012 BalloonFest last weekend, and threw eggs at Alan Hensley and yours truly in our “egganator” again this year. All the money raised went to the fourth-grade Poteau Bandit League football team. I would also like to thank Price Cutter for giving us a few eggs.
Nine-year-old Harley Jordan of Lequire and 50-year-old Cheryl Wineland of Panama were our top throwers this year. They both had strong arms with deadly accuracy. To say we got egg on our faces is an understatement.

Senior DE says Broken Bow game as huge as last week's Muldrow contest

October 25, 2012

When the Poteau Pirates snapped their two-game football losing streak last Thursday night at Costner Stadium with their 41-21 victory over former Poteau assistant coach Rob Johnson and his Muldrow Bulldogs, it kept the Pirates' postseason aspirations alive.
“It was pretty big,” senior defensive end Dylan Stone said about the victory. "We had lost over the previous couple of weeks. We needed that win real bad. It's gotten us up and ready for this week.”

Check out some successful youth hunters from our area

October 24, 2012

This week's column will be dedicated to the youth hunters of our area. I will keep this very short so as many of the deer hunting photographs which I got can run, and everyone can get a chance to see many of the successful young hunters from the LeFlore County area. In fact, thanks to sports editor David Seeley, today's edition has two outdoor pages to help get as many deer hunt photographs in as possible, so be sure you get your hands on a copy.

Spiro hits the road to meet Roland in critical District 3A-8 football game Friday night

October 24, 2012

So far, the Spiro Bulldogs football team continues its winning ways as Thursday night's 42-13 win over Valliant at McClain Stadium made its winning streak reach four games.
However, it's going to be a rough road for the Bulldogs (5-3 overall, 4-1 in District 3A-8) as they will travel to meet the Roland Rangers (6-2, 4-1) in a critical district football game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
