Back in the mid to late 1980s, I worked for Lucian Gassaway at Country Boy Furniture. I had many jobs because ol' Lucian owned a farm in Monroe, and I worked out there, too.

Morning accident leaves driver in critical condition

A three-vehicle accident Thursday morning at the intersection U.S. Highway 59 and Oklahoma Highway 83 resulted in one woman being flown to a Tulsa hospital for treatment.
According to witnesses at the scene, a silver four-door car attempted to turn onto U.S. Highway 59 and in doing so, reportedly pulled out in front of a northbound black pickup. The impact caused the pickup to turn onto it's side and slide into a semi tractor trailer carrying fuel. Witnesses said the pickup impacted with the rear wheels of the semi then came to rest on it's wheels.

Cameron boys get past Wister in OT on Tuesday night; Lady Wildcats pick up road win over Lady Yellowjackets

CAMERON — It was an exciting finish to a night of high school basketball Tuesday night at the Cameron Gym.
The host Yellowjackets got their first win of the season by outlasting the visiting Wister Wildcats by a score of 50-45 in overtime.
The two schools split their games as the Lady Wildcats took the opener over the Lady Yellowjackets 35-23.

Arkoma boys begin basketball season tonight with new coach

The 2012-13 basketball season will begin for the Arkoma Mustangs tonight with an 8 p.m. contest against the Cameron Yellowjackets at home.
The Mustangs were 6-17 last season, and will be very young this year.
“This season's success will depend on how fast the younger players can adapt to the quicker pace of high school basketball,” said Chester Johnson, Arkoma's new boys coach after taking over for longtime coach and athletic director Rick Harvey.

LEFLORE — The Leflore Savages bounced back from the Nov. 8 loss to Whitesboro by knocking off Class B's sixth-ranked Kinta Eagles at home Tuesday night, winning 61-53.
The Savages jumped out to a 17-6 lead after one period en route to a 28-17 halftime advantage.
Whitesboro 74, Buffalo Valley 52: In Buffalo Valley, the Bulldogs clawed their way to a 16-2 lead after a period and never looked back.
McCurtain 58, Howe 57: In McCurtain, the Bulldogs, who trailed 54-50 with about two minutes left to play, outscored the Lions 8-3 the rest of the way.

McCURTAIN — Despite turning the ball over 24 times Tuesday night, the Howe Lady Lions found a way to claw their way to a 59-50 road win over the McCurtain Lady Bulldogs.
Down 20-18 after a period, the Lady Lions outscored the Lady Bulldogs 16-10 in the second quarter to take a 34-30 halftime lead. Then, Howe outscored McCurtain 25-20 to kept the hosts at bay.
Whitesboro 52, Buffalo Valley 43: In Buffalo Valley, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-5 lead after one period.

Cowley County teams pick up road wins over CASC

Behind 22 points from Dominique McKoy and 55.3-percent shooting from the field, the Cowley County Community College Tigers came away with the 70-57 win over the Carl Albert State College Vikings on Tuesday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
A strong first half and a 17-point halftime lead proved to be the difference for the Cowley County's women in their 68-45 win over the Lady Vikings in the first game of Tuesday night's doubleheader.

Several Poteau High School cross-country runners were honored at Tuesday night's season-ending awards banquet, which took place at the First Baptist Church Life Center.
