YUKON â€” Five Poteau High School track athletes won medals at the Class 5A State Meet, which took place Friday and Saturday at Yukon High Schoolâ€™s Miller Stadium.
Deven Bond won three medals, two individually. Bond was third in the 3,200-meter run (12:12.04) and fourth in the 1,600-meter run (5:33.3). She was part of the third-place 3,200-meter relay team of Colleen Peterson, Haley Griggs and Kandace Standridge that had a time of 9:56.88.
Standridge was a multiple-medal winner as well as she was fourth in the 800-meter run (2:24.73).
OKLAHOMA CITY â€” Poteau tennis player Skylar Abbott went 1-2 at the Class 4A State Tournament, which took place Friday and Saturday at the Will Rogers Tennis Center.
Abbott lost his first match 7-5, 6-2 to Byngâ€™s Neil Jorgenson, then beat Oklahoma City Classenâ€™s Jonathan Sergent 6-0, 6-2 in the consolation opening round.
However, Abbott lost to Chisholmâ€™s Tyler Harmon 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of consolation play.
Marvin McKee, of Blackfork, Ark., was the winner of the shotgun raffle at the May 5 fundraiser for the Haw Creek Fire Association. The association said the fundraiser was a success and expressed thanks to LeFlore County Pawn and Gun in Heavener for help in obtaining the shotgun.
Ten local students from the district junior music festival competed at the Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs State Junior Music Festival.
"Our district had one winner and three honorable mentions," said Natlynn Hayes, District 5 festival chairman.
Elyse Marquardt was a winner in the piano solo very difficult II division.
Ethan Heath received an honorable mention in the musical theatre junior III division. Â
Raegan Thomas received an honorable mention in the vocal art song senior II division.
Trenton Underwood received an honorable mention in the hymn playing primary B division.
Donna J. Thompson, 70, of Poteau died Thursday, May 9, 2013, in Poteau. Graveside services were held Saturday, May 11,Â at Hall Cemetery near Slaytonville under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home.
LeFlore County Youth Services will have its 20th annual Golf Tournament on May 24 at the Choctaw Country Club in Poteau.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and tee off is at 10 a.m.Â
Proceeds of this event help finance non-funded programs for the agency, including summer recreational, missing children and the Adopt-An-Angel programs.
LCYS will provide lunch, drinks and door prizes.
The tourney will be four-person teams with an entry fee of $50 per person or $200 per team.
Hole sponsorships are available for a $125 donation, which is tax deductible.
The first meeting of the 2013 season for the Poteau Quarterback Club will at 7 p.m. Monday inside the football fieldhouse at Costner Stadium.
The Quarterback Club would like to invite and encourage anyone that is interested in supporting the Pirates, especially the parents of players in grades 9 through 12, to attend Monday nightâ€™s meeting.
Also, anyone may be a part of the organization, whether or not they have a player on the team.
