DURANT, Okla. – Recently, two forestry team members returned from a 16-day stent in Arizona battling an intense fire on Apache lands. Prevention tech Joshua Bates and Wallace Kitchel, dozer operator, were dispatched to the fire due to the need for special fire fighting techniques.

Oklahoma Multicounty Grand Jury issues removal application against Greer County court clerk

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Multicounty Grand Jury has issued a removal application against the Greer County court clerk, Attorney General Scott Pruitt said Thursday. The removal application issued by the multicounty grand jury accuses Sandy Hopingardner of financial mismanagement in her duties as Greer County court clerk.

Hackler becomes new Poteau boys hoop coach

Last month, Poteau boys basketball coach Scott Nelke took advantage of a chance to go “home” as he took the Pocola Indians coaching job to be at his alma mater.
So, when the spot for Nelke’s spot opened up, Todd Hackler had a chance to do likewise — go “home.” And he will as he was hired this month to be Nelke’s replacement.
“I played here at Poteau,” said Hackler, who was on the 1996 LeFlore County champion Pirate team. “I played [Class] 4A basketball, and I always wanted to coach it. It’s stronger competition and tougher teams.”

Donald Gene Williams III

Donald Gene Williams III, 18 months, of Arkoma died Monday, July 21, 2014, in Little Rock, Ark. Donald was born Jan. 17, 201,3 in Tulsa to Donald Gene Jr. and Elizabeth Francis Ann (Bennett) Williams. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Shirley Bennett.
Survivors include his parents, Donald Jr. and Elizabeth Williams of the home; sisters, Jessica Caldera of the home, Kristina Ray Parris of Tulsa; grandparents, Donald Sr. and Zonia Williams of Arkoma; numerous aunts and uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends; dog, LuLu.

Stephen Lanier Hensley, 83, of Spiro died Tuesday, July 22, 2014.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 25, at Victory Worship Center in Spiro. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.

Storm damage reported in five county towns

With wind gust topping out at 70 mph, strong storms left damage in their wake Wednesday afternoon.
Just after 3 p.m. severe storms plowed their way southwest across the county. High winds, small-sized hail, lightning and rain swept the area fast and hard.
Damages were reported in Heavener, Spiro, Shady Point, Pocola and Poteau. Power lines and trees were reported down in all five towns.

HAZARD...70 MPH WIND GUSTS AND QUARTER SIZE HAIL.

James Garner - Norman, Oklahoma (1928-2014)

Norman native, James Garner passed away on July 19, in his home in Los Angeles at the age of 86.  James Scott Bumgarner was born in Norman where his father owned a store, where he worked until starting school. Jim left school at fourteen and at sixteen joined the Merchant Marines. He returned to high school before joining the National Guard. During the Korean War, Jim earned two Purple Hearts. After discharge, he briefly attended the University of Oklahoma.
