Leflore teams sweep home games from Indianola on Thursday night

LEFLORE — The week ended on a high note for the Leflore High School basketball teams Thursday night on Nadine Carpenter Court as they swept a pair of games from Indianola. The Lady Savages routed the Lady Warriors 59-19, while the Savages followed suit with an 80-34 romp.

Spiro teams advance to championship semifinals of Wilburton Tournament; Lady Pirates reach consolation finals, but Pirates go 0-2 in weekend event

The Spiro High School basketball teams will try to begin their first weekend of basketball season with championships Saturday night.
Both Spiro teams won their tournament openers, and in big ways. The Lady Bulldogs handled the Hartshorne Lady Miners 50-20, while the ’Dogs were too much for the Stigler Panthers as they prevailed 66-43.

Howe, Arkoma girls reach Green Valley Conference Tournament finals

CAMERON — The top two seeds, the Howe Lady Lions and the Arkoma Lady Mustangs, reached Saturday night’s title game of the third annual Green Valley Conference Tournament with Thursday night semifinal victories at the Cameron Gym.
The Lady Lions clawed the Wister Lady Wildcats 75-30, while the Lady Mustangs stampeded past the Panama Lady Razorbacks 75-49. Howe and Arkoma will play at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the title, while Wister and Panama will battle for third place at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Pocola teams playing for consolation titles at Choctaw Nation Invitational Tourney; host Talihina teams vying for seventh place

TALIHINA — It was a rough start for the LeFlore County teams that were in the 2014 Choctaw Nation Invitational Tournament, which is taking place on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.
All of them lost on opening day Thursday, but all have a chance to win team plaques by the end of today.

Myrl Faye Christenberry

Myrl Faye Christenberry, 82, of Bokoshe died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, in Spiro.

Myrl was born Nov. 24, 1932, in Shady Point to Elton and Ruth (Lloyd) Richardson. She was a homemaker. Myrl was a member of Victory Worship Center, Spiro. She was a loving grandma. She loved her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. She loved any sports the kids were in, especially Panama Razorbacks. She loved to crochet. Myrl was a member of a CB club and her handle was “Smokey.”

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Buck and Bill Richardson; and sister, Jackie Taylor.

John Newell Polzin

John Newell Polzin, 53, of Panama, formerly of Eagle River, Alaska, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Alaska. Evans and Miller Funeral home in Poteau is handling arrangements.

Myrl Faye Christenberry, 82, of Bokoshe died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, in Spiro. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at Victory Worship Center, Spiro, with the Rev. Bryan Fouts and Michael Monroe officiating. Family visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Evans and Miller Funeral Home in Poteau.

Group erects Nativity scene at governor's mansion

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Leaders representing multiple faiths could approach Gov. Mary Fallin for the chance to display religious icons at the Oklahoma governor's mansion after she invited a Christian group to erect a Nativity scene there, civil libertarians warned Friday.

Kathie Jackson, a retiree who formed the Nativity Committee of Tulsa, requested that the scene be displayed at the state Capitol, but said Fallin offered to have it put up on the mansion lawn. The scene was assembled Thursday.

An ostrich and a camel for Christmas this year

My old boots have been worn out for some time, and I went to Tip-Top Western Store to get a new pair. I had a pair of ostrich boots that I bought there in 2007, and I wanted another pair of them because they're so comfortable and were long lasting.

The Double Branch Baptist Church will have its drive-through nativity scene beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. You don't want to miss Johnny Baker from Central National Bank riding a camel. Yes, folks. The scene actually has a live camel. I just hope Johnny doesn't wear his spurs! He may become camel food.
