Stigler wins Highway 9 battle with Spiro to begin district play

STIGLER — In the latest installment of the Highway 9 battle between the Spiro Bulldogs and the Stigler Panthers, this one went the way of the Panthers.
The Panthers took the District 3A-8 opener from the Bulldogs by a score of 48-16 Friday night.

Poteau freshmen, PKMS teams sweep Muldrow

MULDROW — Last week, the Poteau Pirates freshmen football team as well as the Pansy Kidd Middle School teams pulled off a sweep of Van Buren, Ark. They did it again Thursday night.
The freshmen more than doubled the Muldrow Bulldogs in winning 34-16.
The eighth-grade Raiders got their second straight win with a 28-8 victory, which came on the heels of the seventh-grade Raiders' 20-14 win.
All three teams return to action next Thursday at Sallisaw, with the seventh-grade game beginning at 5 p.m., followed by the eighth-grade game and the freshmen game.

Now, things will get very exciting on the gridiron

As you all read this week's Gridiron Notes Column, all eight county football teams have began the most important part of their seasons — district play.
The 11-man teams began district play Friday night, while the county's 8-man teams — Arkoma and Bokoshe — did so two weeks ago, ironically against one another.

Poteau girls end week with home wins over Idabel, Muldrow; 'Pink-Out Game,' Senior Day set Monday against Red Oak

The week ended on a high note for the Poteau Lady Pirates softball team as the locals posted a pair of home run-rule wins over the Idabel Warriors 10-0 in four innings Friday morning after doing likewise to the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs 10-0 in four innings Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Pirates will play their “Pink Out” cancer awareness game at 5 p.m. Monday against Red Oak. It will also be Senior Night, honoring Poteau's six seniors, Standridge, Wilson, Vise, Holdsworth, Kingery and Kylie Brown (who is out with a season-ending ankle injury).

Cameron girls beat Arkoma for Class A District Tournament title

ARKOMA — The Cameron Lady Yellowjackets softball team guaranteed itself another week on the diamond.
The Lady Yellowjackets doubled up the Arkoma Lady Mustangs 10-5 to win the Class A District Tournament Thursday afternoon.
The Lady ’Jackets (13-17) will find out on Monday where, who and when they will play in the Class A Regional Tournament, while the loss ended the season for the Lady Mustangs (13-16).

Spiro girls sweep Heavener to win Class 3A District Tournament

HEAVENER — The Spiro Lady Bulldogs handled the Heavener Lady Wolves to win the Class 3A District Tournament on Thursday, posting the sweep by scores of 8-6 and 8-5.
The Lady Bulldogs (14-9) will find out Monday where, when and who they will play in next week's regional tournament, while the losses end the season for the Lady Wolves (12-19).

Bokoshe girls suffer losses to McCurtain, Red Oak in Class B District Tournament to end season

RED OAK — The season came to an end for the Bokoshe Lady Tigers softball team as it suffered two losses in the Class B District Tournament Thursday afternoon. The Lady Tigers lost 8-0 to McCurtain, then fell 12-0 to Red Oak.

Season ends for Howe girls in Class A District Tournament

KEOTA — The good news was the Howe Lady Lions softball team perhaps played their best games of the fall 2012 season Thursday in the Class A District Tournament against the homestanding Keota Lady Lions. However, it still was not good enough to advance onward.
Keota posted wins of 6-0 and 3-2 over Howe to win the district tournament and advance to next week's Class A Regional Tournament. The losses end the season for Howe.

Wister boys win Class A District Tournament title

PRESTON — The Wister Wildcats baseball team is trying to make it to state for the sixth straight season, dating back to the spring 2010 season. The Wildcats have taken the first step toward that goal.
The ‘Cats defeated the Preston Pirates 9-1 to win the Class A District Tournament Friday afternon.
The Wildcats totally dominated things on Day 1 as they routed both the host Pirates 16-3 after doing likewise to the Wilson (Henryetta) Tigers 20-0 on Thursday.
The Wildcats (18-7) will find out Monday where, when and who they will play in the Class A Regional Tournament next week.

Oktaha ends Cameron boys' fall 2012 baseball season

OKTAHA — The Cameron Yellowjackets baseball team saw its fall 2012 season come to an end Friday afternoon as they lost 9-5 to the host Oktaha Tigers in the Class A District Tournament.
The Yellowjackets split their first two games in the tournament on Thursday, blanking Okay 11-0 before losing a heartbreaking, 10-inning game 6-5 to host Oktaha.
