Local golf duo win titles at Pryor; several others place in event

PRYOR — Two Poteau High School golfers won their respective division titles at Friday's South Central Professional Golf Association Tournament at Pryor Creek Golf Course.
Hannah Ward, who won the Class 4A State Tournament May 3 at Oklahoma City's Lake Hefner South Golf Course to help the Lady Pirates won the state title, won the girls with a 76 — eight shots better than the runner-up finisher.
In the boys age 15-18 division, Cody Shore won the title with a 76, while Connor Wheat was seventh (81) and John Scott Sanders was 14th (84).

John T. Jackson, 81, of Poteau died Saturday, June 9, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. No services are planned at this time. Information provided by Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.

Spencer M. Jones, 88, died Sunday, June 10, 2012. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, at Christian Grove Free Will Baptist Church under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home, Spiro.

Leola 'Momalea' Nadine Butler

Leola “Momalea” Nadine Butler, 87, of Spiro died Friday, June 8, 2012, at her home in Spiro. Leola was born March 27, 1925, in Hartman, Ark., to Jack and Mary E. (Harris) Shelton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene Butler; and son, Jack Butler.
Leola loved fishing, dancing, antiquing, sports (especially Oklahoma Sooners and OKC Thunder). She retired after working 28 years at Dixie Cup. She loved her church. She had four special angels from First Baptist Church that she truly appreciated and loved.

Billy V. Butler

Billy V. Butler was born Oct. 28, 1925, to circuit preacher N.D. and Evelyn M. Butler at Octavia.  He died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, June 8, 2012, at his home in Panama.
 Bill earned an associate’s degree from Poteau Community College. He was a 32nd Degree Mason through the Scottish Rite Temple in McAlester and a past Worshipful Master at his Cameron lodge. He was a WWII veteran.
In 1947, Bill married Wynema Ward, daughter of Ed and Ocie Ward, of Poteau. Wynema said he taught her to cook and she taught him to dance. The couple had four children.

Poteau softball player to be in FP All-State Game today

There will be a LeFlore County high school fast-pitch softball player hitting the field for the last time this afternoon at the University of Oklahoma Softball Complex.
Poteau's Briley Benson will represent the county for the Middle East team in the Oklahoma Fast-Pitch Softball Coaches Association All-State Games today at OU. The Middle School All-State Game between Benson's East team and the West will take place at 1 p.m.

Riverdawgs outlast Russellville in 12 to win Katzer Tournament opener; locals will play for title tonight, followed by home opener Sunday afternoon against Bartlesville at Pocola High School

FORT SMITH, Ark. — It took 12 innings, but the Eastern Oklahoma Riverdawgs Major American Legion baseball team won its Maurice Katzer Tournament opener.
The Riverdawgs scratched across a run in the 12th inning to down Russellville, Ark., by a score of 7-6 Thursday night at Hunts Park.
The ’Dawgs (4-5) were to play Midwest Friday afternoon, then they will play in the championship game at 6 p.m. tonight at Hunts Park.
Spiro's Jeff Walden hit a Texas-League bloop RBI single in the 12th inning to score Spiro's Shane Thompson with the game-winning run.
