Mary Belle Scott Cooper, 86, of Poteau died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 in Fort Smith, Ark. Mary Belle was born April 16, 1926, in Hitchita to James Albert and Haley (Gabbard) Scott. She and her husband owned and operated the Sears Roebuck store in Poteau. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Grady Scott and Dale Scott; sisters, Dovie Brown, Wilma Shipp and Helen Sychr.
Tommie Louise Griffin, 74, of Shady Point died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, in Shady Point.
Tommie was born October 28, 1938 in Bonham, Texas, to Joseph Saul and Bonnie (Marsh) Nowell. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Joyce Davis, Jim Nowell and Bill Nowell; nephew, Joseph Nowell; niece, Christy Nowell Rogers; grandson, Jason Markley; and Joseph Saul Nowell; her parents and stepfather, Jack Coltrane; numerous aunts and uncles. She was a beautician for 45 years.
Area business owner, William Joseph LeRoux Jr., 47, of Hodgen, was scheduled to appear in LeFlore County District Court today as part of the conditions for being released on a fugitive bail. The bail was set after LeRoux was arrested on a grand jury indictment from Maricopa County Arizona for 12 counts of sexual misconduct with a minor. LeRoux refused to sign extradition to return to Arizona in October and was released on a fugitive bond while Arizona obtained a governor's warrant.

The Catholic Charities Food Bank located at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Poteau spent Tuesday preparing boxes of food for area families.
The CC facility opened it's doors Oct. 8 but Tuesday organizers hosted an open house.

Two families are homeless following a morning fire at a duplex located on the 500 block of Dewey Avenue in Poteau.
Both apartments were occupied at the time of the fire. According to Vernon King, one of the tenants, he woke up and smelled smoke so he woke his neighbor and told him to get out of the house.
No one was injured in the fire. Poteau Fire Department was able to contain the fire to the attic of the home.
Grace Place, located at 15595 Green Top Road in Poteau, has invited the public to view the new shelter on Dec. 2 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
According to Nancy Putman, Executive Directory at Grace Cottage, a home for pregnant women ages 18 and under, Grace Place will provide services to women over the age of 18-21 and their children.
â€śWe need lots of household items such as kitchen supplies, linens and toiletries,â€ť said Putman. â€śGrace Place is registered at Kohl's and Walmart. This is a great opportunity for you to help us get the house off the ground, meet our new house parents.â€ť
