Mason Alexander Cravens

July 5, 2012

Mason Alexander Cravens was born June 1, 2012, in Oklahoma City, and passed from this life on June 25 in Oklahoma City.
His time here was brief, but the impact on those he leaves behind is great. He will forever be loved by his parents Chad and Jennifer (Neuharth) Cravens; his brother, Logan; his grandparents, Wayne and Joanne Neuharth of Poteau and Rex and Patty Cravens of Yukon; and many other family members and friends.

Barbara Gillson

Barbara Gillson, 90, of Fort Smith, Ark., formerly of Poteau died July 4, 2012, in Fort Smith. Barbara was born June 4, 1922, in Humiston, Iowa, to John and Pearl (Vaught) Scovel. She was a Hotel-Convention Sales Coordinator in Fort Worth, Texas, as well as being a homemaker. She and husband, Walter, moved to Poteau in 1977. Barbara was preceded in death by Walter. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Poteau.

Tommy “Tom” Wilson Jr.
Tommy “Tom” Wilson Jr., 86, of Okmulgee died Wednesday, July 4, 2012. He died peacefully surrounded by his family at the Senior Suites Nursing Home in Broken Arrow after complications from a stroke. He was born on March 28, 1926, near McCawber to Tom and Eva Wilson both now deceased. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ret. Lt. Col. Lloyd Wilson and sisters; Hazel Willingham and Dorothy Wilson.

Dr. Robert Lee Hampton

Dr. Robert Lee Hampton was born on Jan. 16, 1930, to Roy and Winnifred (Sory) Hampton in Dallas. He grew up in Texas with two sisters, one brother, and one half-brother. When he was 14 years old, his mother died of tetanus and the family was devastated. However, they pulled together, accepted more responsibility, and remained loving and caring individuals.

The second book from an Oklahoma author who’s from the area now has even more ties to LeFlore County.
Author Joe Harwell of Tulsa was in Poteau in February for a book signing at the Lowrey Hotel. While in the area he had dinner with Jack Holt of Jack’s Jewelry. The two are old friends and graduated together. Harwell asked Holt to design a pendant to match the cover of his second book “Upside Down Heart.” Holt accepted the opportunity and worked with his jeweler

Sixth-inning rally lifts Poteau Pirates past Wister in OK Kids Midget Regional

When you're the home team, sometimes that last at-bat is so important. Just ask the Poteau Pirates OK Kids Midget baseball team.
After the Wister Wildcats had broken a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth inning, the Pirates scored twice in their last chance in their half of the inning to earn a 4-3 victory in the loser's-bracket quarterfinals of the 2012 OK Kids Midget Regional Tournament Tuesday night at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.

Heavener Thunder rolls past Muldrow in Coach-Pitch Regional; Wister stays alive, but Whitesboro eliminated

HEAVENER — Last month, the phrase “Thunder Up” was being used quite a bit as the Oklahoma City Thunder made it to the NBA Finals. However, that same phrase just might be used this week at Blues Park for the 2012 OK Kids Coach-Pitch Regional Tournament.
The Heavener Thunder are two wins from a state-tournament berth after routing the Muldrow Bulldogs 14-4 Tuesday night at Blues Park.

Panama Boomers reach Midget Regional Tournament winner's-bracket final

PANAMA — The host Panama Boomers find themselves just two wins from a state-tournament berth.
The Boomers got past the Madill Cats 12-10 Tuesday night to advance to tonight's 8 p.m. winner's-bracket final of the 2012 OK Kids Midget Regional Tournament.
The Boomers will play the Stilwell Indians at 8 p.m. tonight for the right to get to the 4:30 p.m. Saturday title game. The Indians defeated the Okemah Panthers 5-3.
There will also be loser's-bracket games today and tonight in the tournament.

Poteau Rebels rout Dewar to earn winner's-bracket final berth in Stilwell OK Kids PeeWee Regional

STILWELL — The Poteau Rebels once again had to stage a rally to stay undefeated in the 2012 OK Kids PeeWee Regional Tournament.
After rallying from a 1-0 deficit Monday night to the Stilwell Cardinals, the Rebels rallied from a 2-1 deficit to end up routing the Dewar Sooners 14-2 in four innings Tuesday night.
The Rebels will play in the winner's-bracket final at 4:30 p.m. Friday, with one more win putting them into the 4:30 p.m. Saturday championship game.
At the moment, the Rebels are two wins from a state-tournament berth.
