Pocola girls fall in title game of own tournament to Vian; Lady Wolves third

The Pocola Lady Indians came in runners-up in their own tournament, losing 3-1 in the finals to Vian on Saturday night.
The Lady Indians beat Heavener 3-1 in the winner’s-bracket semifinal Friday before losing 6-0 to Vian in the winner’s-bracket finals on Saturday. Right after the Vian loss, Pocola beat Heavener once again, this time 2-1 in the loser’s-bracket final.
Heavener blanked Roland 6-0 on Friday before losing to Pocola, then posted wins over Keota [8-2] and Muldrow [6-0] before losing to Pocola in the loser’s-bracket finals.

LeFlore County death investigated

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Office and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the death of a LeFlore County man.
According to Sheriff Rob Seale, a body of a white male was found near Cameron Sunday [Aug. 17] evening.
The body has been sent to the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause of death.
No other information is available at this time.

Three dead, two critically injured after wreck near Shady Point

Three teenagers are dead and two are in critical condition after a wreck near Shady Point last night.

The wreck happened on Latham Road. According to Emergency Personnel, police were in pursuit of a truck. Oklahoma Highway Patrol investigated the accident. No other details were currently available.

Pocola, Heavener girls win openers in Pocola Tournament, but Cameron, Talihina, Arkoma girls lose in Day 1 action; Lady Indians, Lady Wolves pitchers toss no-hitters

The host Pocola Lady Indians and the Heavener Lady Wolves posted victories in the opening round of the Pocola Tournament on Thursday afternoon.
Pocola's Sammie Kuhns no hit the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets for a 6-0 victory, while in the game prior the Lady Wolves blanked the Talihina Golden Tigers 12-0 behind Makenzie Wilson's no-hitter.
The Arkoma Lady Mustangs, the other local team in the field, fell 11-0 to the Gore Lady Pirates. The Keota Lady Lions also lost, falling 4-1 to the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs.

Whitesboro, Howe girls winners in Whitesboro Invitational openers; Leflore girls lose to Stringtown

WHITESBORO — The host Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs and the Howe Lady Lions were victors on opening day of the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs Invitational on Thursday.
Whitesboro got past Clayton 5-3, while Howe blanked Buffalo Valley 8-0.
The third local team in the field, the Leflore Lady Savages, fell 8-0 to the Stringtown Lady Tigers.

Poteau Red-White Scrimmage Saturday morning on practice field; admission will be Gatorade, towels, soap, detergent

There was a chance there was not going to be a Red-White Interteam Scrimmage this preseason due to turf installation issues, but as the saying goes, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
The Pirates will have their annual Red-White Scrimmage at 9 a.m. Saturday on the practice field just south of the fieldhouse at Costner Stadium. Admission is small bottles of Gatorade, towels, liquid soap and liquid detergent.

A couple of big innings doomed the Poteau Lady Pirates in their 11-4 home loss to the Sequoyah-Tahlequah Lady Indians on Thursday afternoon.
Wister 3, Red Oak 2, 8 inn.: In Wister, Sooner Vanhook’s two-out, RBI single in the eighth inning scored Stevee McMillin with the game-winning run.
Spiro 9, Colbert 2: At Rock Creek Lady Mustangs Invitational in Blue, the Lady Bulldogs, who trailed 1-0 in the opening inning, scored twice in the first inning and three runs in the second for a 5-1 lead after two innings.

Poteau cross country runners begin season Saturday at Tulsa

Contractor faces heavy fines over water violations in Hugo

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality is proposing a record environmental fine of nearly $3.2 million against a company hired to treat water in a town in far southeastern Oklahoma.

A department investigation determined Severn Trent Services failed to meet minimum chlorine standards, putting potentially thousands of area residents of Hugo at risk of drinking unsafe water for 317 days over two years, The Journal Record (http://bit.ly/1gGVCCz ) reported.
