The Poteau Pirates freshmen football team was trying to keep their winning streak intact on a crisp autumn Monday night at Costner Stadium against the Broken Bow Savages.
After a slow start, the Pirates were able to get some big plays en route to a 22-6 victory â€” and keep their record unblemished.
The Pirates will conclude their season at approximately 7 p.m. Tuesday at Costner Stadium as they will entertain the McAlester Buffaloes to try to cap another perfect season. The game will follow the Pansy Kidd Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade games, which will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
GREENWOOD, Ark. â€” The Poteau Bandit League football teams split their four games Saturday against the Greenwood Blue teams.
The fifth-grade team shut out the opposition 36-0, while the third-grade team edged Greenwood Blue 6-0 in double overtime.
Greenwood Blue took the sixth-grade game 33-12 and the fourth-grade contest 27-6.
Mildred Smith, 93, of Spiro died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012. A wake is planned from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Spiro with burial in Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith, Ark.
On Sept. 29, 2012, Helen Ione Stephens Cook, 93, formerly of Heavener, went peacefully in her sleep to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, at her home in Sun City, Calif., where she had resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Trell Mercer, since July 2010.
One of seven children, she was born Sept. 7, 1919, to the late Elsie M. and William P. Stephens in Laramie, Wyo. Helen graduated from Laramie High School in 1935 and majored in music at Phillips University in Enid.
Bobbie Lee Turner Russell,Â 84, of Poteau died Friday, Sept. 5, 2012 in Poteau.
Bobbie was born March 2, 1928, in Fine Springs, Ark., to Ray and Ida Mae (Dennis) Blount.Â She was a telephone operator for Alltel.Â Bobbie was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church, Poteau.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ida Mae Turner, in 1958; granddaughter, Lisa Turner in 1992; her parents; and her brother, Arvel Joe Chitwood.Â She loved bowling.Â She loved to run around with her childhood school friends, Wilma Lee, Tootie Alfred, Grace Boggains, Mary Joe Logan and Doris Robertson.
Lois Olene (Chapmond) Bess, 65, of Spiro died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. She was born in Poteau on Jan. 26, 1947, to Archie and Edris â€śOleneâ€ť (Davis) Chapmond.Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Aislynn Marie Oâ€™Brien, 2 months,Â passed away Sept. 29 in Oklahoma.
Born July 26, she was the infant daughter of Lisa Degilio and Patrick Oâ€™Brien IV.
In the short time with us, Aislynn was truly the light of our life, our little angel.

A Talihina youth charged in the death of a 13-year-old has entered a plea of guilty.
Brandon Brown, 16, of Talihina, was accused of driving under the influence and having an accident which resulted in the death of Dalton Adams,13, of Talihina in 2011.
Brown appeared before District Judge Jon Sullivan Thursday and entered a plea of guilty. He will be sentenced in November.
