WISTER — In a true pitcher's duel, Wister's Tyler Gibson outdueled Spiro's Tyler Didway as the Wildcats blanked the Bulldogs 2-0 Monday afternoon in a rematch of last year's LeFlore County Tournament championship game — which was won by the ’Dogs 4-1.
Gibson struck out 12 batters and scattered three hits.
The ’Cats got an RBI double by Dalton Brown in the second inning and an RBI double by Jon Watts in the third inning to produce the game's only runs.
The name change of a local annual event has caused a stir among the residents of Poteau and the surrounding area but even though the name has changed it will not be forgotten.
The announcement that the 2012 rodeo held at the LeFlore County Fairgrounds would now be hailed the Poteau Frontier Rodeo rather than the Phil Gardenhire PRCA Rodeo. But the management behind the decision would like to assure those who attend the rodeo, while the name has returned to it's original state of decades ago, Gardenhire will continue to be memorialized nightly during the event.
WISTER — The good news was that the Wister Lady Wildcats got a win Monday afternoon, knocking off the Howe Lady Lions 11-3.
However, the bad news was both local teams suffered losses to the Red Oak Lady Eagles. Red Oak defeated Howe 10-2, while beating Wister 12-0.
Cameron 6, McCurtain 4; Keota 18, Cameron 0: In Cameron, the Lady Yellowjackets split their two games in Monday's home three-way.
No more information was reported on the games.
Muldrow 8, Spiro 2: In Spiro, the loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 2-3 on the season. No more information was available.
McALESTER — The Poteau Lady Pirates golf team was third at Monday's McAlester Invitational.
Two Lady Pirates were medalists as Hannah Ward was runner-up medalist with a 79, while Addie Guthrie was eighth-place medalist with a 92.
Oktaha's Kailey Campbell was the top medalist on the day.
Cathleen Manlove had a 96, while Heather Robinson carded a 129.
The Lady Pirates will return to action today at the Oktaha Invitational, which will begin at 9 a.m.
LeFlore County will have at least one basketball All-Stater this season. Talihina's Landry James was named to the Small East team for the 2012 Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association All-State Games, which will be June 2 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.
“I couldn't be happier for her,” Talihina Girls Coach Jeff Oliver said. “I thought one of the three (James, Krissy Houston and Chelsea Baggs) had a shot. At the tryouts, Landry just shined. I'm thrilled to death for her.”
