When fans watch Carl Albert State College Lady Viking sophomore basketball player Whitney Barnes, it helps to understand why she is one of the top scorers and 3-point shooters in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference, as well as the NJCAA.
Barnes, is a 5-3 shooting guard from Indianola.
"CASC is close to home, and I like the campus a lot,â€ť Barnes said.
Having a year of experience in the OCAC has been huge for Barnes.
"Coming into this season, I knew what to expect, who the players were and what each team had,â€ť she said.
CLARKSVILLE, Ark. â€” The Carl Albert State College baseball team will be perfect for this week. The Vikings swept a doubleheader from the University of the Ozarks junior varsity by scores of 9-3 and 9-2 Wednesday afternoon. The twinbill is the only action scheduled this week for the Vikings.
The Vikings will return to action at 2 p.m. Tuesday in a road doubleheader against Seminole State College.
The LeFlore County Bass Club had its first open tournament of the 2012 season last weekend on Broken Bow Lake. There were 40 anglers who caught a total of 29 fish weighing 68.89 pounds. Each fish caught averaged 2.37 pounds. Of the 22 boats, five limits were caught.
The duo of Haskell and A.J. Higgins won the tournament with a total of 15.71 pounds, earning $500.
Keith Griffith and Gary Steelman were second (13.62 pounds, $300), while Al Monks and John Newell were third (10.24 pounds, $200).
Jason Wickware had the big bass winner, weighing 6.35 pounds to earn $200.

Traci Barnes and other members of the Poteau Area Business Association (PABA) will be on hand tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Buckley Public Library to speak about the upcoming special election on the proposed hotel tax in Poteau. The party has also invited anyone wishing to speak in favor of the tax to come to the meeting as well.

Lawanna Keirsey, 40, of Sallisaw died Feb. 28, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark.Â Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 2, at Flower Hill Pentecostal Church.Â Burial will be at Sallisaw City Cemetery, under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home of Spiro.
Wesley Doyle Adams, 59, of Spiro died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012.

Edna Lou Walkup, 80, of Howe died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, in Poteau.
Edna, a lifelong area resident, was born Nov. 6, 1931, in Independence to Calvin and Mary (Fortner) Waymire. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Howe, where she worked in many areas, loving each person who came in contact with her. Edna worked for years in the day care at Heavener First Baptist Church, where she cared for many children from the area.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ewing Waymire, Bob Waymire and Eugene Waymire.
