Poteau girls, Pocola boys claim fifth-place trophies at LCT; Poteau, Spiro boys win championship semifinals Friday night

SPIRO — The Poteau Lady Pirates and the Pocola Indians were the third and fourth teams to pick up trophies at the 80th LeFlore County Tournament Friday afternoon at the Spiro Gym.
The Lady Pirates edged the Heavener Lady Wolves 35-33 in overtime to win the fifth-place contest, while the Indians beat the Cameron Yellowjackets 56-40 in the boys' third-place game.

Poteau trio, Talihina wrestler place at Sallisaw Tournament; Pirate matman wins title at 132 pounds

SALLISAW — Four local wrestlers placed in this past weekend's Sallisaw Tournament.
Poteau's Tyler Tustin won the title at 132 pounds, while teammates Devin Anderson (113 pounds) was third and Gabe Sanchez (182) was fourth.
“We had a brutal consolation semifinal round,” second-year Poteau Coach Chris Barbee said. “We just didn't perform that good. We just have to make a better attempt to get to the consolation finals.”
As a team, the Pirates were sixth.

Alumni football is coming to Poteau. Gridiron Alumni is planning several full contact alumni football games.
Gridiron Alumni travels the nation pitting old football rivals against each other one more time. Players are needed to sign up, and the first 40 players on each team get to play.
The team that gets 30 people registered first gets home-field advantage. Last year, hundreds of players and thousands of fans swarmed stadiums to watch their home town heroes strap it on one more time.
This year, Gridiron Alumni would like to bring alumni football to the whole state of Oklahoma.

Bonnie Marie King

Bonnie Marie King, 87, of Poteau died Friday, Jan. 20, 2012, in Poteau. Bonnie was born in Poteau on Dec. 22, 1924, to Claude and Nellie A. (Pendergrass) Johnson. She was preceded in death by her father, Claude Johnson; mother, Nellie Johnson and stepfather, Claude Oliver; husband, Henry “J.R.” King; and best friend, Mary Tiffee. 
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Nancy King of  Poteau; granddaughters, Jamie Rowland, Emilee King and Natalee King all of Poteau; and two great-grandsons; Jaxon King and Gavin Rowland.

Zerilda J. McCaughey

Zerilda J. McCaughey, 71, of Poteau died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark.  Zerilda was born July 11, 1940, in Monticello, Mo., to Emmett Hayden and Clara May (Porter) Crain. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl McCaughey; daughter, Tina L. Murray; nine brothers and sisters. 
Survivors include her stepdaughter, Deana Kay Cottle of Kingman, Ariz;.  four grandsons, Sam Murray, Patrick Murray, Brock Cottle, Garrett Cottle; two granddaughters, Fawn Higgins, Chesnee Cottle; brother, Lloyd Crain  and five great-grandchildren. 

Luther A. Parham

Luther A. Parham, after 87 years of full life, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 22, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. Visitation with family and friends will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Evans-Miller Funeral Home in Pocola.
Luther and his wife Bonita were married for 69 years and raised  12 children in Poteau. They owned and operated Parham Fruit Stand while supporting the family. They moved to Fort Smith, where he worked at Rheem Manufacturing until he retired.  
Luther was a proud man, hard worker and dedicated father and husband.   

Lessie Mae McKinney Dell

Lessie Mae McKinney Dell, 84, Spiro, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 24, at Old Cache Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home, Spiro.
