Spiro boys suffer gut-wrenching state quarterfinal loss to Verdigris

EDMOND — If there was any group of individuals asking the question “What if?” it is the Spiro Bulldogs baseball players.
The Bulldogs left the bases loaded twice, and stranded 12 runners on base all total, as they lost a gut-wrenching Class 3A State Tournament quarterfinal contest by a score of 1-0 to the Verdigris Cardinals Thursday night.
The ’Dogs end the season at 22-12.

Lady Pirate basketball duo with chance to make USA Junior National Team

Poteau Lady Pirate basketball players Kaitlan Standridge and Colleen Peterson will have an opportunity to go play some summer hoops.
The Lady Pirate duo have been invited to tryout to make the United States Junior National Basketball Team in tryouts which will take place May 20 at Lighthouse Sports Complex in Oklahoma City.

Clayborn, Tackett duo win Brittney Cox Memorial

The duo of Joe Clayborn and Josh Tackett won last Saturday's Brittney Cox Memorial Golf Tournament, which took place at Wolf Ridge Golf Club.
Josh Wiles and Brad McKinney were second, followed by James and Gary McGuiness.
Tackett and Perry Reed were the two individuals who won closest to the pin honors, while Clayborn won the longest drive contest.
All total, the benefit event raised $4,000, but an additional $4,000 was raised through hole sponsorships.

Poteau Spirit Center names its April Stars of the Month

The April Stars of the Month were named by the Poteau Spirit Center
Ava Cartwright is among them because she “is determined to accomplish challenging skills.”
Isabella Pillow is the Gymnastic Star of the Month. She got picked for her incredible improvement, and also for being very sweet and well mannered.
The Tumblebear Star of the Month is Adriona Deiter. She works hard, listens and has the cutest little smile.
Madison Gregory is the Tumbler of the Month. She is constantly wanting to learn new skills.

Cameron baseballer chosen to play for USA in Puerto Rico

Cameron High School senior Austin Standridge has joined an elite fraternity of college-bound athletes from around the country. Standridge was recently chosen to represent the United States and LeFlore County as a member of Coast to Coast Baseball in Puerto Rico this summer.
During the seven-day program, Standridge will compete against top amateur teams from greater San Juan while receiving instruction from Coast to Coast staff who have all played or coached the game at the collegiate or professional level.

The Arkoma Mustangs Blue-White Spring Football Scrimmage will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Mustang Field. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. There will also be concessions available.

The Eastern Oklahoma Riverdawgs Major American Legion baseball team will have tryouts at 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Cameron.
Players who are between the ages of 16 and 19 are eligible to try out.

On Saturday Campbell Soup Company will again join forces with Poteau letter carriers to Stamp Out Hunger across America, providing assistance to millions of Americans who are struggling to put food on their tables every day.
Now in its twentieth year, the SOH effort is the nation's largest single-day food drive. In 2011, drive organizers across the country collected more than 70 million pounds of total food donations for the eighth consecutive year.

Carl Albert drops first game of Region II Baseball Tournament

BARTLESVILLE — The Carl Albert State College Vikings played and lost their first game in the Region II Tournament Thursday afternoon. The Redlands Community College Cougars beat the Vikings 14-6 at Doenges Ballpark.
The Vikings (37-20) was slated to play a Friday night game against Murray State. If they lost, they will play an elimination game at noon today, while a win will put them into a winner's-bracket semifinal at noon today.
One more loss regardless will eliminate Carl Albert from the tournament.
