The 2011 Oklahoma State Cowboy High School Christmas Hitting Camp will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, while the Christmas Pitching Camp will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
The camp is for high school freshmen through seniors.
Registration for both camps will begin at 9 a.m. the morning of the camp. The camp cost is $200.

Christmas vacation is here! Costa Rica, here we come

Both of my elementary boys’ teams won their tournaments at Monroe last week. I want to give a shout out to Monroe Coach Casey Hemphill. He did a great job running the tournament and coaching all those kids. Casey played basketball at Poteau back when Clint and Candeeda were in school, and he was one heck of a good player. Keep up the good work, Casey!

Edwina L. Schlosser, 74, formerly of Heavener, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, in Poteau. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Dowden Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home, Heavener.

Howe teams sweep Arkoma Monday night at home

HOWE — Fresh off bringing home some hardware from last weekend's Choctaw Nation Tournament, the Howe High School basketball teams kept the momentum going with a sweep of the Arkoma teams Monday night at the Howe Gym.
The Lions tamed the Mustangs 79-44, while the Lady Lions did likewise to the Lady Mustangs by a score of 66-24.

WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs held on for dear life to post a 36-35 victory over the Panola Bearcats Monday night.
Bokoshe 64, McCurtain 38: In McCurtain, the Lady Tigers (8-0), who led 29-24 halftime advantage, used full-court presses, which allowed Bokoshe to take control of the game in the third quarter as the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Bulldogs 23-7 to take a 52-31 lead into the final period.
Wilburton 44, Pocola 25: In Wilburton, the Lady Diggers jumped out to a 9-5 lead after one period and continued to build on their lead from there.

WILBURTON — After only scoring a free throw in the final period, the Pocola Indians bounced back in overtime to down the Wilburton Diggers 46-43 Monday night.
Panola 72, Whitesboro 64: In Whitesboro, the Bulldogs (4-9) led 17-10 after one period, but the Bearcats took advantage of Whitesboro's foul trouble and outscored the ’Dogs 62-47 over the final three quarters — thanks in part to shooting 43 free throws in the game.
McCurtain 74, Bokoshe 23: In McCurtain, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 28-2 lead after one period and never looked back.

LeFlore County Deputies investigate animal cruelty

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department is currently investigating an animal cruelty case near Smithville after they received a report in reference to several starving or deceased animals.
Albert McReynolds, 66, and William McReynolds, 18, are currently being held at the LeFlore County Detention Center on charges of animal cruelty.
According to Sheriff Bruce Curnutt, a deputy was dispatched to the McReynolds home Tuesday evening after a call was received about abuse of animals at the residence.

Local horse owner wins award

Poteau horse owner Danny Caldwell shared the 2011 Ran Ricks Award at Remington Park.
Caldwell shared the award with Black Hawk Stable of Elk City as each finished the season with 18 victories.
Caldwell won his third owning title while Black Hawk Stable won for the first time. The Ricks Award is named after the late owner and breeder who passed in 1996 after years of working to bring pari-mutuel racing to Oklahoma. Ricks won a total of seven owner championships at his home track of Remington Park.
