Pocola girls Choctaw Nation Invitation Tournament consolation champs

TALIHINA — At least one LeFlore County basketball team left Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium with a trophy on the final day of the Choctaw Nation Invitation Tournament.
The Pocola Lady Indians outlasted the Kingston Lady Redskins 52-51 in overtime to win the consolation championship.
The other three local teams all lost their trophy games. The Pocola Indians lost 53-49 to the Antlers Bearcats in the consolation championship.

Whitesboro boys fall in third-place game at inaugural First National Bank Classic; Lady Bulldogs suffer loss to Pittsburg in consolation finals

McALESTER — The Whitesboro Bulldogs had a rough ending to the first-ever First National Bank Classic at the Southeast Expo Center. The ’Dogs lost 60-51 in the third-place game Saturday after losing 57-52 to eventual champion Calera in Friday night's championship semifinals.
The Lady Bulldogs suffered a 53-47 loss to Pittsburg in the consolation championship Saturday afternoon.

Gustavia “Gussie” Wright, 79, of Howe died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, in Fayetteville, Ark.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Christine Long, 65, of Howe died Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark.
She was born July 2, 1949, in Heavener to Billy Joe and Della Mae (Davis) Cruse. She was retired from Bremner Cracker Co. where she was a case up packer.
Christine was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Phyllis Stewart; and a brother, William Cruse.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at Unite Church, Spiro. Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Pocola.

Tommy J. “Tom” Donathan, 83, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2014. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at Arrow Heights Baptist Church of Broken Arrow. Visitation to be held at Floral Haven Funeral Home of Broken Arrow from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Spiro girls win Wilburton Tournament; Poteau girls, Red Oak boys capture consolation championships on Saturday; Bulldogs end tournament with two-game losing streak to end up fourth

The Spiro Lady Bulldogs had a successful start to their basketball season as they won the Wilburton Tournament, downing the Stigler Lady Panthers 40-37 in Saturday night’s title game at the Wilburton Gym. The Lady Bulldogs reached the championship with a 40-36 victory over the host Wilburton Lady Diggers on Friday night.
The Poteau Lady Pirates and the Red Oak Eagles also claimed hardware on Saturday afternoon, each winning their consolation championship games. The Lady Pirates rallied to beat the Hartshorne Lady Miners 53-35, while the Eagles held off the Eufaula Ironheads 52-45.

Howe teams sweep Green Valley Conference Tournament titles

CAMERON — Both Howe teams were seeded No. 1 coming into the third annual Green Valley Conference Tournament, and that’s exactly “Howe” they finished.
The Lions defeated the tournament-host Cameron Yellowjackets 54-36 in Saturday night’s finals after beating Wister 62-55 in Friday night’s championship semifinals. Cameron made the finals with a 67-54 victory over Arkoma in Friday’s other championship semifinal.
The Wildcats defeated the Mustangs 70-59 in Saturday’s third-place game.
