Talihina girls stay alive with win over Rattan at Class 2A Area Tournament; Lady Golden Tigers will play this afternoon in consolation semifinals against Howe

WILBURTON — The basketball season will continue one more day for the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers.
Talihina's girls posted a 46-31 win over the Rattan Lady Rams in the Class 2A Area Tournament Thursday afternoon at the new Wilburton Gym.
The Lady Golden Tigers will play in the consolation semifinals Howe, a 45-30 winner over Sallisaw-Central Thursday night, here at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon. It will be a rematch of this season's LeFlore County Tournament title game, won by Howe 31-27.

Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2012 Poteau High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Categories include: football, boys and girls basketball, baseball, fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls track, boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls all-around athlete, wrestling, coaching and support and service.

Hard work pays off for CASC Lady Viking guard

When fans watch Carl Albert State College Lady Viking sophomore basketball player Whitney Barnes, it helps to understand why she is one of the top scorers and 3-point shooters in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference, as well as the NJCAA.
Barnes, is a 5-3 shooting guard from Indianola.
"CASC is close to home, and I like the campus a lot,” Barnes said.
Having a year of experience in the OCAC has been huge for Barnes.
"Coming into this season, I knew what to expect, who the players were and what each team had,” she said.

Carl Albert baseball team sweeps pair from University of Ozarks JV

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. — The Carl Albert State College baseball team will be perfect for this week. The Vikings swept a doubleheader from the University of the Ozarks junior varsity by scores of 9-3 and 9-2 Wednesday afternoon. The twinbill is the only action scheduled this week for the Vikings.
The Vikings will return to action at 2 p.m. Tuesday in a road doubleheader against Seminole State College.

Higgins duo capture first open tournament last weekend

The LeFlore County Bass Club had its first open tournament of the 2012 season last weekend on Broken Bow Lake. There were 40 anglers who caught a total of 29 fish weighing 68.89 pounds. Each fish caught averaged 2.37 pounds. Of the 22 boats, five limits were caught.
The duo of Haskell and A.J. Higgins won the tournament with a total of 15.71 pounds, earning $500.
Keith Griffith and Gary Steelman were second (13.62 pounds, $300), while Al Monks and John Newell were third (10.24 pounds, $200).
Jason Wickware had the big bass winner, weighing 6.35 pounds to earn $200.

Glenis Shoemake, 92, of Talihina died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, in Talihina.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at the Falfa Baptist Church with Carroll Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be in A. L. Stephens Cemetery, Clayton, under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.

Tea Party Meeting tonight

Traci Barnes and other members of the Poteau Area Business Association (PABA) will be on hand tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Buckley Public Library to speak about the upcoming special election on the proposed hotel tax in Poteau. The party has also invited anyone wishing to speak in favor of the tax to come to the meeting as well.

Ruth James, 83, of Colbert died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, in Colbert.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 5, at Talihina First Baptist Church with Kip Heth and Ollie Heth officiating.  Burial will be in Sardis Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.

Dewitt Ray Nelson, 49, of Wister died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, in Wister.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, in Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau, with Rev. Leon Glenn officiating, under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.

Lawanna Keirsey, 40, of Sallisaw died Feb. 28, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark.  Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 2, at Flower Hill Pentecostal Church. Burial will be at Sallisaw City Cemetery, under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home of Spiro.
