Gale Arthur Schell

Gale Arthur Schell, 78, of Muskogee went to be with his Heavenly Father Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015. He was born July 2, 1936, to Marshall and Marian (White) Schell in Jones.

He graduated from Oktaha High School with the class of 1954. Gale married the love of his life, Ronnie Faye (Jackson) Schell, on July 12, 1955, in Oktaha. They shared over 59 years of marriage together. Gale was a member of Grace Bible Church of Muskogee.

Bobby Stinson

Bobby Stinson, 66, of Heavener died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015. Services were held Sunday, Feb. 15, at Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Congressman Mullin to host Poteau meeting tonight

Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-02) will be hosting a town hall meeting tonight [Feb.16] in Poteau.

The meeting is part of several upcoming meetings across the state in LeFlore, Sequoyah, Craig, Ottawa, Haskell, McIntosh and Nowata counties for the week of Feb. 16-19, 2015.

The public forums are part of Mullin’s fourth round of in-person town hall meetings to be held in all 26 counties of Oklahoma’s Second Congressional District. Meetings are free and open to the public. Registration is not required to attend.

Study: Oklahoma's daily small quakes raise risk of big ones

SAN JOSE, California (AP) — Small earthquakes shaking Oklahoma and southern Kansas daily and linked to energy drilling are dramatically increasing the chance of bigger and dangerous quakes, federal research indicates.

This once stable region is now just as likely to see serious damaging and potentially harmful earthquakes as the highest risk places east of the Rockies such as New Madrid, Missouri, and Charleston, South Carolina, which had major quakes in the past two centuries.

Callahan wins grand prize package for 2014 Pigskin Picks Contest season

Alan Callahan is the lucky individual who won the first-ever grand prize package for the Poteau Daily News’ Pigskin Picks Contest, which was awarded this year for the first time.
Callahan was selected based upon having the most wins during the season, seven. That was two more than Robert Swinford, who had five.
Callahan’s grand prize was a $50 check and a gift certificate at Geno’s Pizza.
The Poteau Daily News will return with an even bigger Pigskin Picks Contest package for the 2015 season, which will begin in late August/early September. Look for details as the season gets closer.

Wister teams celebrate Senior Night with sweep of Panama hoopsters

The Wister High School basketball teams celebrated Senior Night with a pair of wins over Panama on Thursday night at the Wister Gym.
The Wildcats capped the evening with a 90-60 rout of the Razorbacks, while the Lady ‘Cats began the night with a 55-46 victory over the Lady Razorbacks.

Poteau wrestlers end regular season with dual wins over FS Northside, Southside on Thursday night; Pirates will be in Class 4A Regional Tournament next Friday, Saturday at Coweta

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The regular season ended on an extremely high note for the Poteau Pirates wrestling team, which won both duals in Thursday night’s triangular.
Poteau beat the host team, Fort Smith Northside, 48-29 and Fort Smith Southside 48-30.
The Pirates will begin the postseason next weekend at the Class 4A Regional Tournament in Coweta. The top four finishers in each weight class will qualify for the state tournament the following weekend.
