August 10, 2015

Today is Monday, August 10, the 222nd day of 2015. There are 143 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:
On August 10, 1945, a day after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Imperial Japan conveyed its willingness to surrender provided the status of Emperor Hirohito remained unchanged. (The Allies responded the next day, saying they would determine the Emperor's future status.)

High school football practice begins Monday; heat always a factor as practice begins

August 8, 2015

Start of practice brings lots of anticipation; Talihina, Pocola teams beginning with ‘Midnight Madness’

August 8, 2015

Just like Christmas morning, the anticipation of a big day at times is so great it cannot be put into words. For football players, Aug. 10 is that day — the first day of football practice.
“Anytime you come upon football season, it’s good,” first-year Poteau coach Forrest Mazey said. “If you have passion for the game, like coaches do, you really don’t work a day in your life. It’s engrained in us.”
Along with Mazey, two other coaches, Panama’s Jeff Broyles [a former Pirate coach] and Bokoshe’s C.J. Burk, begin this season with new teams. That, too, makes for a lot of anticipation.

Instilling basics, doing evaluations big thing in opening practice week

August 8, 2015

Since this week will be the first time since May football players will go through ordinary drills, most of our local coaches are just trying to make sure the players know the basics.
“We’re tired of the weight room. We’re ready to get out on the field and start learning,” Heavener coach Sam Hembree said. “We’re going to work really hard and getting really good at a few things. Until we get good at a few things, we’re not going to elaborate [into more difficult stuff]. We’re going to try to get better running it than they [the opposition] are at stopping it.”
