Although it’s been a very mild summer, there’s bound to be hot temperatures ahead for high school football players as they begin practice Monday for the 2014 season.

Curtiss Mal Naylor, 59, of Wilburton died Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, at Big Bend Hospice House in Tallahassee, Fla..

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug., at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Summerfield.

Burial will be in Reichert Cemetery under the direction of Waldrop Funeral Home, Wilburton.

Georgia Ruth Kerbow, 80, of Poteau died Thursday, August 7, 2014 in Fort Smith, Ark. She was retired from the LeFlore County Clerks office, a member of Woman Nationally Active for Christ, Epsilon Sigma Alpha and Pleasant Valley Free Will Baptist Church in Poteau. Georgia was born Jun 17, 1934, in Poteau to Herman and Elenor (Johnson) Dorey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Kerbow; sister, JoAnne Broyles; and her parents.

Oklahoma counterterrorism institute shutting down

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. (AP) — A counterterrorism institute in Oklahoma is shutting its doors after failing to find funding to continue operations.

The Oklahoman reported ( ) that the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism has provided training to tens of thousands of police officers from around the country.

Convicted Oklahoma sex offender arrested in Texas

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — A convicted sex offender from Oklahoma who was wanted for parole violations has been arrested in El Paso, Texas.

Cleveland County Sheriff Joe Lester said Friday that 30-year-old Teddy Dean Davis was arrested Thursday by deputy U.S. marshals during a traffic stop.

Davis was convicted in 2011 of molesting a 6-year-old child and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was paroled after two years, but authorities say he violated the terms of his parole and a warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear for a court hearing in June.

Public meetings slated to discuss hospital tax

Several town hall meetings are planned to discuss the Aug. 26 special sales tax election.

Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center officials will speak and answers about the need for the proposed half-penny sales tax to support the hospital and allow it to reopen its surgery and obstetrics departments.

Meetings are scheduled at the following times and locations:
• Aug. 12, Talihina Public Schools (teachers only), 10 a.m.
• Aug. 12, Stapp-Zoe Community Center, 6 p.m.
• Aug. 12, Heavener Library, 7 p.m.
• Aug. 14, Southside Baptist Church, Poteau, 7 p.m.

Love, McKay win on Wister

The LeFlore County Bass Club had its last open bass tournament of 2014 on Saturday at Wards Landing on Wister Lake. There were 13 boats filled with anglers who caught 27 fish that weighed a collective 69.3 pounds. Each fish averaged 2.57 pounds, with nine limits — which consisted of three fish — were caught.
Danny Love and Melvin McKay won the event with 9.68 pounds, which included McKay’s big bass winner, weighing 5.52 pounds. The duo won $275, while McKay got an extra $110 for the big bass winner.
