Senate passes bill approving Keystone XL oil pipeline

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-controlled Senate on Thursday approved a bipartisan bill to construct the Keystone XL oil pipeline, defying a presidential veto threat and setting up the first of many battles with the White House over energy and the environment.

The 62-36 vote advanced a top priority of the newly empowered GOP, and marked the first time the Senate passed a bill authorizing the pipeline, despite numerous attempts to force President Barack Obama's hand on the issue. Nine Democrats joined with 53 Republicans to back the measure.

Ouachita, Ozark-St. Francis forests begin prescribed burns

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — The Ouachita and Ozark-St. Francis national forests will be conducting prescribed burns in Arkansas and Oklahoma over the next several months.

Park authorities announced the burns on Thursday.

The burns are designed to re-establish fire's natural role in the forest ecosystem, improve forest health and reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfires. Prescribed burns are conducted when conditions indicate that there will be minimal impact to the public.

Noted death penalty abolitionist seeks Oklahoma moratorium

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Noted author and death penalty abolitionist Sister Helen Prejean is urging Oklahomans to reconsider the death penalty while the Supreme Court decides whether the state's lethal injection method is constitutional.

The Roman Catholic nun and author of the book "Dead Man Walking" joined a group of death penalty opponents Monday calling on Oklahomans to consider joining the 18 states that have abolished it. The group also delivered more than 30,000 online petition signatures to Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin's office.

New child abuse indictment issued against Oklahoma man

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A new 24-count indictment has been issued against a 20-year-old Oklahoma man who is accused of sexually abusing children at a Kenya orphanage.

The indictment was returned against Matthew Lane Durham of Edmond, who federal prosecutors allege engaged in sex acts with as many as 10 children ages 4 to 10 while volunteering at the Upendo Children's Home near Nairobi from April to June 2014.

Prosecutors have also accused Durham of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with minors under 18 and aggravated sexual abuse of a child under 12.
