The Silent Witnesses

LeFlore County Women's Crisis Services
Director Sissy Carden speaks to the crowd
gathered Wednesday at the Leflore County
Courthouse to see the Silent Witnesses
exhibit in honor of Domestic Violence
Awareness Month. Each red silhouette in
the back ground represents a person in
Oklahoma killed by domestic violence.
Several area elected officials spoke during
the event. To the left is one of the children
that was represented in the exhibit.

Poteau to host library fundraising kick-off

October 5, 2011

The public is invited to the “New Direction –
Poteau Library Kick Off” that will be held at the
Donald W. Reynolds Community Center.
The event will provide information to the public
about the progress, the direction and the goal of the
new library. Several members of the city council as
well as staff from the library will be in attendance.
The Kick Off will be held on October 6, from 5:30
p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided
for attendees.

August unemployment numbers show our area in highest region

According to a report from the
Oklahoma Employment Security
Commission local unemployment rates
have remained the same during the month
of August but that doesn’t help Southeast
Oklahoma who’s weighed in as the highest
region of unemployment.
The statistics released last week for
the month of August show that LeFlore
County is ranked with the second highest
unemployment rates in the state with
Sequoyah County topping the list as the
highest.
The OESC states in their report that in
August, Oklahoma’s seasonally adjusted
unemployment rate held steady at 5.6

Staying safe

Women from across campus at Carl Albert State
College attended the Safe Campus, Strong Voices
Workshop on Friday, September 30. Meg Nicholson,
from the District Attorney’s Office, was the keynote
speaker. Other speakers were Leah McLaughlin,
CASC VP of Student Affairs; Bob Hendricks, CASC
Director of Campus Police; Kerri Blair, CASC
Guidance Center Counselor; and Kim Hughes,
CASC Coordinator of Student Support Services/
Licensed Professional Counselor. Policies, procedures,
counseling services, confidentiality, precautions,
and victim’s resources were all highlighted

For the love of learning

Theses second grade boys from Poteau Primary School who attend the Boys and
Girls Club of LeFlore County after-school program, are enjoying some time on the
computer. The BGCLC after-school program, is a non-profit organization that
relies on the support of the community. To make a donation or find out more about

Woman sues county after December accident

A lawsuit was filed in
the LeFlore County Court
Clerk's Office Wednesday
naming the county as a
defendant after a woman
was injured in an automobile
accident.
According to the petition
filed by Attorney
Gary Buckles on behalf of
his client, Krista
McCurtain, she claims that
LeFlore County and
Bradley Lewis, 20, of
Duncan,Okla., were both
negligent in their actions
which caused her injury.
On December 11,
McCurtain was a passenger
in a 1999 Pontiac four
door driven by Lewis. At
approximately 4 a.m. they
were traveling down Green
Hill Road, two miles east

Local couple returns from missions trip

Southern Africa was the
focus of Dr. Ron and
Janice Hesser’s recent
ministry trip to Africa in
2011, sponsored by the
missionary support organization,
Crio Ministries,
they founded ten years
ago. Leadership conferences
were held in
Johannesburg, and Cape
Town, S. Africa, and one
in Lusaka, Zambia with
eight African nations represented.
More than 150 pastors
attended the three conferences
where discipleship
and service in the local
community were emphasized.
While Pastor Ron taught
the men, Janice led the
ladies in the Fruit of the
Spirit and marriage issues
