Two schools go smoke free

Two local schools have
chosen to begin 2011-2012
school year 24/7 tobaccofree
Tobacco kills more
Oklahomans than alcohol,
auto accidents, AIDS, suicides,
murders and illegal
drugs COMBINED. To
combat the dangers of
tobacco use and protect
their students many schools
have chosen to adopt a 24/7
Tobacco Free School
Policy.
In order to recognize the
importance of adult role
modeling for students during
formative years and to
provide a healthy environment
for students, staff,
patrons and visitors, the
Spiro and Howe School
Boards recently voted to

Poteau man faces federal charges following probe

A Poteau man was
arrested on federal charges
Wednesday after he allegedly
attempted to pay off a
witness in a case against
his son.
Tom Oakes, 64, of
Poteau was arrested on
charges of tampering with
a witness or victim after
an investigation into the
accusations by Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms
Agents.
According to the criminal
complaint filed in the
United States Federal
Court, Oklahoma Eastern
District, on August 26,
Assistant United States
Attorney Shannon Henson
notified ATF Agent Curt
Collins, that John Albert,
who is a witness in a federal
case against Tom
