Students enrolled in Freshman Orientation at CASC got creative on Wednesday
with a photo of themselves with a campus police officer they needed as part of a scavenger hunt to help familiarize them with the campus. The students had to take photos of themselves with people and things from around campus to earn points in the hunt.

Man on a mission to change the world

September 23, 2011

For most of us Wednesday was just that, Wednesday,
the 21st day of September. But for Kirk Smalley,
Wednesday was the 496th day without his child.
Smalley spent the day talking to students in our area
so that no other family has to spend their days counting
the days since the last time they saw their child smile or
heard their child laugh. Smalley’s 13-year-old son, T.J.,
killed himself in 2010 because of a bully at school.
Since his death, Smalley and his wife have spent their
life savings to try and prevent another child from doing

Literacy Council Student of the Month

September 21, 2011

Nena Santiago earned the distinction of being named Student of the Month for
August as a participant in the Literacy Initiative Program of the Literacy Council
of LeFlore County. The award is based on attendance in the 30-hour per week program
which enhances reading, writing, math and life skills instruction. Santiago
attended 137 hours of instruction during the month of August. Santiago (center) is

Commissioners sell JDC facility

Sealed bids for the
Juvenile Detention Center
in Talihina were opened
Monday morning during
the LeFlore County
Commissioners' regular
meeting and after a brief
discussion, a new owner
was named.
Sequoyah Enterprises,
Inc., offered the lone bid
for the facility but at first
glance, Commissioner
Lance Smith suggested the
item be tabled due to the
requirement that the bid
be at least 80 percent of
the appraised value.
Once it was confirmed
that the bid by SEI met all
guidelines, Smith made a
motion to accept the offer
and the company was
unanimously awarded the

Banner bandits

Banner bandits struck a
local business in Poteau
Friday night while the
Pirates were on the field
battling it out with the
Gravette Lions.
The main branch of
Central National Bank of
Poteau, located downtown,
displayed a Poteau Pirate
banner at the entrance to
the bank in support of the
local football team. But the
banner is no longer waving
in the wind after a thief in
the dark took it.

Talihina woman injured in accident

September 21, 2011

A Talihina woman is in
serious condition in a
Tulsa hospital following a
four wheeler accident
Sunday morning.
According to the accident
report released by the
Oklahoma Highway
Patrol, Daniella Lea
Williams, 28, of Talihina,
was a passenger on a 2011
Polaris Ranger 800 driven
by Michael S. Langley,
39, of Antlers when the
accident occurred.
According to the report,
at approximately 2 a.m. on
Sunday morning, the two
were travelling at an
unsafe speed down a dirt
driveway, seven miles east
of Antlers near Dozier
Road and State Highway

Jury finds Oakes not guilty on Federal charges

A Poteau man who was indicted in Federal Court on
firearms charges was released from custody last
Wednesday after a jury found him not guilty.
Randall Wayne Oakes, 41, of Poteau was arrested in
May after an altercation that occurred at his home early
in the morning.
According to the affidavit, around 8 a.m. Tuesday
morning, Kasi Morgan Albert, 25, and John David
Albert II, 27, both of Poteau, arrived at a family member's
home on the corner of North Saddler and Gassaway
Drive to retrieve some of Kasi Albert’s belongings.

Morning accident

September 19, 2011

A two vehicle accident in Panama Friday morning left traffic backed up temporarily
as many were trying to get to school and work. According to the accident report,
Sarah Painter, 23, of Panama was stopped at the US Highway 59 and Tecumseh
intersection waiting to turn left onto the highway. Two vehicles were traveling
northbound when the one on the inside lane signaled to turn right onto Tecumseh.
Painter, not seeing the second vehicle driven by Brian Fassette, 65, of Heavener in

A local woman who took telling bedtime
stories to her children one step further
will be signing her recently published
book at a Poteau business on
Saturday, September 24.
Sandy Ellis, who works as a graphic
designer at GCT Printing Solutions and
has more than twenty years experience in
writing and composing with the Poteau
