Arkoma student accused of rape at school

September 16, 2011

An Arkoma football player is behind bars Thursday
morning for second degree rape charges after a victim
came forward and filed a complaint against him.
Tyler Sweeten, 18, of Arkoma, was arrested on
Wednesday after the minor victim in the alleged crime
reported the incident to LeFlore County District
Attorney’s investigators.
According to court documents, the alleged crime
against the minor victim happened while on school
Thursday afternoon, Sweeten appeared in front of
Special Jeff Judge Singer at 1:30 p.m. for a bond hearing.

Martinez/Ducan scholarship softball tournament planned

Tournament will be
October 8 at the Panama
softball fields. entry fee is
$100 per team. The tournament
will consist of
teams of seven men and
three women using 44 core
balls. Senior league and
Ultra 2 bats are prohibited.
There is a three home run
limit, home runs scored
after the limit will be
counted as singles. There
will be a home run derby
at noon.
Proceeds from the tournament
will be used to
fund a memorial scholarship
in the names of

Allen speaks to Rotary

The Rotary Club of Poteau was honored to have Senator Mark Allen as the guest
speaker for their September 14th meeting. The Senator shared his passion for serving our part of the state. He stated the people of southeast Oklahoma put him in office and it is their interest he will always look out for. The Poteau Rotary Club meets Wednesdays, at noon, in the second story dining room of EOMC.

Memorial Bug Run

The Second Annual
Ricky D. Hill Memorial
Bug Run will be this
Saturday, September 17 at
Corgill’s Yamaha at 2010
North Broadway in Poteau.
Sign in starts at 8 p.m. and
departures begin at 9 p.m.
All motorcycles, cars, and
trucks are welcome, so
long as they can maintain
highway speeds. The entry
fee is $20 per driver plus
$5 for every passenger.
The route for this year’s
Bug Run will start at
Corgill’s Yamaha in Poteau
and continue on to
Heavener before going
through Wister and returning
to Corgill’s Yamaha.
Alcohol, drugs, and bad
attitudes are not permitted

Two bond elections Tuesday

from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
there will be a Special
School Bond Election for
Monroe, Shady Point, and
Red Oak Schools.
Secretary of the LeFlore
County Election Board,
Phillip Zearley, offered
tips to voters on how to
make their voice heard.
Zearley stated that following
the marking
instructions posted at the
polling place and inside
the voting booths is essential.
If a mistake is made
in marking a ballot, voters
should not try and correct
the error, but should
instead return the ballot to
poll workers for destruction.

Police find drugs during traffic stop in Howe

September 9, 2011

Formal charges were
filed against a Heavener
man Wednesday afternoon
stemming from his arrest
in July for allegedly possessing
Jason Lee Ellis, 28, of
Heavener, was charged
with possession of a controlled
dangerous substance
– methamphetamines
and marijuana
after Howe police officers
discovered narcotics hidden
under a seat during a
traffic stop.
According to the affidavit
filed by Howe Police
Officer Michael Oliver, on
July 26, he witnessed Ellis
driving a red Chevy
Cavalier that turned onto
Old State Highway 59
northbound. Oliver followed

Pocola woman files suit after fall

A Pocola woman who
claimed to have been
injured while on school
property levied a lawsuit
against the Pocola School
District asking for
$125,000 in damages.
According to the petition
filed in the civil case,
Gena Hayes alleged that
on April 14, 2010 she was
at the Pocola Elementary
School to enroll her granddaughter
in Pre-
Kindergarten. While at
the school she was walking
on black mats that
Pocola School personnel
had used to form a sidewalk
between buildings
when she stepped in ice
cream and fell. The petition

Quinton man dies in accident

September 7, 2011

A single vehicle accident
that sent one man to
the hospital last week for
critical injuries turned
tragic after the injured
man succumbed to his
injuries on Wednesday.
According to the accident
report released by the
Oklahoma Highway
Patrol, Leon Wright, 58,
of Quinton was driving a
2004 Yamaha V-Star on
State Highway 31 approximately
two miles east of
Quinton when he attempted
to turn onto State
Highway 2.

Inmate attempts suicide

A Sebastian County
inmate set to stand trial in
Oklahoma for murder was
transported to a Fort Smith
hospital after Sebastian
County Detention Officers
discovered he was wounded.
Elvis Thacker, 23, of
Cedarville, Ark., was treated
and released at Sparks
Regional Medical Center
this weekend for a superficial
wound to his neck that
is believed to have been a
suicide attempt.
Sunday afternoon, detention
officers issued razors
to inmates who are given an
allotted amount of time to
shave, then the razors are
retrieved and disposed of.
