Case dismissed in 29-year-old murder

A man who was charged in the murder of a Carl Albert State College student 29 years ago will not go to trial after charges were dismissed.
Suhail Mohammad Shanti, 48, of Jordan, was arrested 16 months ago as the suspect in a 29 year old murder case. He was accused of killing Mohamed Ayman Al-Zein, an international student at CASC.
According to LeFlore County District Attorney Jeff Smith, the case was dismissed on request of the state. Smith listed the death of witnesses, the degradation of blood evidence and witnesses who could not be located as reasons for the dismissal.

Young students tour Poteau Police Department

Students from the Poteau Primary School took a tour of the Poteau Police Department Wednesday morning learning about the officers and the jobs they do.
The students toured the police department, city hall and other downtown businesses during their field trip.

Panama man sought for trafficking in illegal drugs

October 16, 2012

A warrant was issued on Friday for a Panama man who is accused of selling methamphetamines at the Choctaw Nation Casino in Poteau.
Samuel Jackson, 25, of Panama was allegedly witnessed by District 16 Drug Task Force Agents selling methamphetamines to another person at the entrance of the casino on Aug 14.
The affidavit states agents stopped Jackson, who was in a 2007 Chevy pickup, and while searching the vehicle found more than 20 grams of methamphetamines.
According to jail records, Jackson was not arrested at the time of the traffic stop.

Texas man arrested in connection with marijuana grow operation

A warrant for the arrest of a Texas man in connection with the largest marijuana grown operation found in LeFlore County has been arrested, according to the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics.
Juan Lopez Monsivais, 33, of Allen, Texas, was arrested Monday afternoon by Texas Drug Task Force Agents after a warrant for his arrest was issued in LeFlore County.

Area man escaped injury in weekend house fire

October 15, 2012

The home of George Chester, located in the 700 block of Witte Street in Poteau, caught fire at approximately 4 a.m. Saturday morning. According to Poteau Fire Chief Jon Pickel, a postal worker on her way to work saw the fire and was able to wake Chester up and help him get out of the home before he was injured.
The fire is under investigation by the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal's Office.

Attempted kidnapping report a hoax, police say

Poteau police called off a manhunt for a would-be kidnapper Thursday after the alleged victim admitted lying about the incident.
Poteau Chief of Police Stephen Fruen said he wanted the public to be aware of the hoax and feel safe on city streets.

GTCT presents "The Jungle Book"

Actors will take the stage this week and bring alive Disney's "The Jungle Book."
The presentation will be put on by actors with the Good Times Community Theatre at the Poteau High School Choir Room. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday. For tickets contact Melanie Thomas at (918) 649-7160 of message "CommunityTheatreGood" on facebook.

'The King and I' Opens Thursday at CASC

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I” will open at Carl Albert State College at  7 p.m Thursday.
Additional performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Sunday, and 7 p.m. Monday.
Tickets will be available at the doors of the Hamilton Auditorium. Adult admission is $7, students $5, and all CASC students and employees attend for free.
The musical is under the direction and choreography of Bill Day and Dana Dinsmore-Davis, with Bill King on piano.  

Brown enters plea of guilty in manslaughter case

A Talihina youth charged in the death of a 13-year-old has entered a plea of guilty.
Brandon Brown, 16, of Talihina, was accused of driving under the influence and having an accident which resulted in the death of Dalton Adams,13, of Talihina in 2011.
Brown appeared before District Judge Jon Sullivan Thursday and entered a plea of guilty. He will be sentenced in November.

Three people stabbed at Panama bar

October 6, 2012

Three men are being treated for stab wounds after a fight at a Panama bar.
According to sources, a fight broke out at Jimmy's west of Panama on State Highway 31 at approximately 10:30 p.m. During the fight, three men were reportedly stabbed, one of them in critical condition.
