The sounds of music and festivities will soon be wafting through the air above Heavener as the Heavener Viking / Celtic Festival gets underway.
The Friends of Heavener Runestone would like to announce their upcoming festival to take place at the Runestone to help raise park operation funds. The festival is scheduled to kick off on March 17-18 with fun, entertainments and games for all ages.
Festival go-ers are encouraged to don their finest Celtic or Viking garbs and join the friends for a two-day event guaranteed to have something for everyone.
Kansas City Southern is partnering with the Poteau Police Department to conduct an Operation Lifesaver “Officer on a Train” event today to promote public safety at railroad grade crossings.
The event will start at 4 p.m. at the Dewey Street crossing in Poteau.
A LeFlore County man will receive a life sentence for killing his girlfriend's 3-month-old baby.
A jury of seven women and five men were sequestered Friday evening at approximately 5:30 p.m. after the conclusion of a murder trial involving defendant Aaron Ray Wesley Hinson who was accused of the murder of a 3-month-old infant.
At 9:25 p.m. the jury rendered their verdict, finding Aaron Ray Wesley Hinson, 24, guilty of first degree murder involving a child. The jury rendered a guilty plea with a recommended sentence of life.

The town of Whitesboro is mourning the loss of their High School Boys Basketball Coach today following a tragic car accident shortly before noon today in Southern LeFlore County.

A jury of seven women and five men were sequestered Friday evening at approximately 5:30 p.m. after the conclusion of a murder trial involving defendant Aaron Ray Wesley Hinson who was accused of the murder of a three month old infant.
At 9:25 p.m. the jury rendered their verdict, finding Hinson guilty of first degree murder involving a child. The jury rendered a guilty plea with a recommended sentence of life.

Officials with the LeFlore County District Attorneys office expect closing arguments at the Aaron Hinson Case later today. Case will be released to jury for verdict. Make sure to grab a copy of the Poteau Daily News tomorrow for the complete story.

Caden Place is the two-year-old of Jarrod and Rachel Place of Heavener. On January 30 he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He is now at St Francis receiving treatment. First Baptist Church in Heavener is hosting a Indian Taco dinner on March 4 to help with the expenses. On April 14 the Heavener Fire Department with the help of the Heavener and Poteau Masonic Lodges are putting on their fourth Annual Heavener Benefit Texas Hold'em Tournament. This year the proceeds from that event will be used to help the Place family.

Traci Barnes and other members of the Poteau Area Business Association (PABA) will be on hand tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Buckley Public Library to speak about the upcoming special election on the proposed hotel tax in Poteau. The party has also invited anyone wishing to speak in favor of the tax to come to the meeting as well.

Trial for Aaron Hinson began Tuesday morning at 9 A.m. Seven woman and five men were chosen to decide Hinson's fate. The trial began with jury members listening closely to what their responsibilities and requirements are as a juror. After instructions were given opening statements were presented by both Margaret Nicholson, Assistant District Attorney prosecuting in the case and Peter Ashor, defense attorney for Hinson. Nicholson began telling the jurors what evidence she would be presenting and how she is convinced that Hinson was guilty of murdering his girlfriends three-month-old son.
