Saving Savannah Tassone

A local child is undergoing skin grafts after an accident left her with fourth degree burns. Savannah Tassone, a third grader at Poteau Primary School and daughter of Erin and Joel Billy was playing with a friend on January 13 when the accident happened. the two young girls had come across a candle and a can of gasoline. Nine year old Savannah received fourth degree burns on your right leg and foot.

A Tribute To Falkner

Last week a local educator beloved by many lost his three-year battle with cancer. His family, students, friends and colleagues are now preparing for a memorial service this weekend to bid farewell to this beloved man.
James Daniel "Danny" Falkner was born on the last day of the year in 1949 and was raised in the community of Poker Bend near Panama. Although as a youngster he moved with his family to California several times, LeFlore County was most definitely home. It was also where he met his future wife, Janice Sue Gollihare.

Officials work together to bring drop box to county

LeFlore County residents now have a safe way to dispose of their unused and unwanted prescription medications.
The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department, and the Wreck-Less Drug Free Coalition of Poteau have recently completed a cooperative effort to bring a prescription medication drop box to LeFlore County.

Local student heads to the stage at ECU

A Poteau High School graduate will soon see her name in lights, Micah Hobday of Poteau will star as LuLu in a collegiate production of "Cabaret" which opens Thursday at East Central University.

Taylor listed as Competitor for Ms. CEntennial Chamber

The Poteau Chamber of Commerce announced the entertainment section for this year's 93rd Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be the "Ms. Centennial Chamber" Pageant. The Ms. Centennial will be presented in four parts throughout the night.
The entertainment will consist of an opening dance, fashion show, talent and the final judging.

Hundreds converge At CASC Senior Day

More than 450 seniors representing 40 high schools attended the annual Senior Day at Carl Albert State College on Thursday.
The students spent the day learning about CASC, toured campus, had lunch at the cafeteria and went home with a stack of college information — including CASC T-shirts and other promotional items.
David Hogan, Upward Bound Coordinator at CASC Poteau, served as emcee of the overall event and had students cheering and dancing in the aisles, according to Leroy Nolan, Director of High School and College Relations.

San Bois CASA, which serves the counties of LeFlore, Latimer and Haskell, have invited the public to the Sixth Annual Cajun Celebration of "FAT Tuesday", Feb. 21, 2012 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the VFW Building at 108 W. Ada Street in Wilburton Okla.
The event will be hosted by San Bois CASA volunteers, staff and board members and will have a sampling of great Cajun food including gumbo, jambalaya, beans and rice, shrimp salad, and Hoppin' John.
CASA is a non-profit organization that trains community volunteers to advocate for the best interest of our children in need.

Shady Point man files suit over alleged missing knife

February 8, 2012

A Shady Point man who was
arrested in September for disorderly
conduct and discharging a
firearm in city limits filed a
small claims lawsuit against
several county and municipal
entities after he alleged they
failed to return property to him
after his arrest.
Charley Wayne Covey, Sr.,
65, filed the small claims case
naming the Shady Point Police
Department, the Shady Point
Board of Trustees and the
LeFlore County Detention
Center as defendants in his claim
for financial reimbursement for
lost property.
According to the affidavit
filed by Covey, he stated the

LeFlore County Courthouse increases security measures

A safety meeting held
Wednesday afternoon
involving county elected
officials, law enforcement
and safety personnel concluded
with a unanimous
decision to increase security
inside the LeFlore County
In the past, the courthouse
employed a full time
deputy for security through
special funds incurred
through the collection of
fines and costs. Due to a
decrease in collection of
fines the position was
restructured to guarantee
security present during protective
order court dockets
and high risk court proceedings

Business owners concerned over proposed tax

A group of business owners in attendance
at the special meeting of the Poteau
City Council Wednesday night expressed
their concerns regarding the proposed hotel
tax that will be voted on later this year.
The group made up of hotel and motel
owners in Poteau addressed Poteau Mayor
Jeff Shockley and the members of the city
council before the council voted to pass a
resolution that will begin the process for a
special election in April.
The proposed tax would be a five percent
tax collected locally by the city on
money paid by people staying in motels,
