State unemployment numbers edging higher

Oklahoma's overall unemployment rate is slowly creeping higher, according to an October report from the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission.
Due to the previous shutdown of the federal government, information about each county is unavailable at this time. State-wide, however, unemployment rates increased from 5.4 percent in September to 5.5 percent in October. The increase left 100,320 laborers of the state's estimated labor force of 1,812,690 unemployed.

Panama teen injured in shooting incident

A Panama teen is in critical condition at a Tulsa hospital following what police said was an accidental shooting this weekend.
According to Panama Police Chief John Whiteaker, the shooting happened on Pierce Road at about 2 p.m. Saturday.
Whiteaker said the 16-year-old teen and a 14-year-old friend were walking along the road as they returned from a hunting trip. The friend tripped, which resulted in the .243-caliber rifle he was carrying to discharge and the bullet striking the teen in the neck, according to Whiteaker.

Essay winners awarded at Poteau Upper Elementary School

The Poteau Upper Elementary School recently held a Thanksgiving essay contest, available for their more than 500 students to enter. Students third through fifth grade were invited to submit an essay telling what Thanksgiving means to them. The entries were judged by Pansy Kidd Middle School advanced students. The winners were announced Friday. Today Poteau Daily News, which sponsored the prizes for the winning students, will showcase the first of three winning essays. The third-grade winner's essay follows.

Pirate football coach guest speaker at Rotary meeting

Poteau High School football coach Greg Werner talks to the Poteau Rotary Club and its guest on Wednesday at the Pirates winning season. Werner made his remarks at the club’s meeting Wednesday at Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center. Werner said the team has done a great job this year, winning the first round of the football championship on Friday against Cleveland. He said the team faces the Clinton Red Tornadoes this week.

Morris shines for Oklahoma

Katie Morris an employee of the Days Inn & Suites in Poteau has just been honored with the Days Inn-Wyndham Worldwide SHINE award.
The SHINE (Special Hospitality Initiative Notable Employee) Award is given to one employee per state based on customer service.
The Award Winning Days Inn & Suites and its team have won the SHINE Award every year since they opened in 2002, an eleven year winning streak.

Contest winner has lunch with Sheriff

LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale visited the Poteau Primary School Thursday to have lunch with LCSO coloring contest winner 5-year-old Marshall Dacus. Dacus also received a bag of gifts from Seale that included a Superman costume and several educational toys.

Jones named Mr. Poteau High School

November 19, 2013

Nine Poteau High School students competed Monday night during the Mr. Poteau High School pageant. The ceremony opened with a choreographed dance by the contestants. Mason Jones, son of Fred and Sheila Jones, was named the reigning Mr. PHS and Spirit Winner.

Cameron woman injured in accident

November 19, 2013

A Cameron woman is recovering in a Tulsa hospital after suffering serious injuries in an accident Monday night.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol accident report, Rhonda Burden-Speaks, 47, of Cameron and a juvenile were passengers in a 2005 Ford pickup driven by 47-year-old Terry Speaks of Mansfield, Ark., when the pickup left the road and struck a pole.
Rhonda Speaks was flown by an Eagle Med medical helicopter to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa.
The juvenile, whose name was withheld, and the driver were not injured, according to the report.

Protectors drawing to raise money for children in need

November 19, 2013

The Protectors Motorcycle Association will hold a drawing for a Sony PlayStation 4 to raiser money to buy Christmas toys for area children.
Donations are $5. The drawing will be held at the Poteau Christmas parade on Dec. 7. You do not need to be present top win.
Tickets are available from any Protectors member. For more information, call Carolyn Currens at (918) 647-3832.

Students inducted into Elementary National Honor Society

November 15, 2013

During the first induction of students from Poteau Upper Elementary into the Elementary National Honor Society, 78 students took the stage during ceremonial proceedings.
