Laura Burleigh of Poteau is among performers in "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," a musical comedy to be presented March 28-30 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. The Oklahoma Child Support Services office in Poteau donated 160 books to the Kibois Head Start Program as part of Read Across America Day.
The office collected the books during a week-long community book drive ending on March 1, Read Across America Day.
Read Across America Day is the nationâ€™s largest celebration of reading, with more than 45 million participating to highlight the importance of developing a love of reading from an early age. Held each year on March 1, the day coincides with the birthday of beloved childrenâ€™s author, Dr. Seuss.
A house fire at 2407 Central St. in Poteau has been put out after a two hour battle by the Poteau Fire Department.
The home, owned by Mike Bynum, was destroyed in the blaze.
According to Poteau Fire Chief Jon Pickel, no one was home when the fire started and the cause is undetermined.
Pickel said the fire department received assistance from the Wister Fire Department in putting out the fire.
The Poteau Fire Department is battling a house fire in the 2800 block of Central Street.
The home was fully engulfed when crews arrived.
The homeowner was not at the home when the fire started but arrived as fire crews attempted to extinguish the blaze.
