Absentee voters encouraged to get ballots early

Voters in LeFlore County who want to have absentee ballots mailed to them for the annual school election should apply now, according to County Election Board Secretary Sharon Steele.
Steele said the County Election Board can accept applications for absentee ballots until 5 p.m. on Wednesday Feb. 6, voters who want to vote by absentee ballot are urged to apply early.
Absentee ballot applications forms are available at the County Election Board office located at 103 N. Church St. in Poteau or they can be obtained online at www.elections.ok.gov.

Community support brings new light on events at Shady Point School

Shady Point Schools have recently installed a new LED sign for public notification of school events.
The 16 foot LED sign is located at the intersection of Wheelus Street and U.S. Highway 59/271.
Shady Point Superintendent Bruce Gillham said the sign was purchased and installed at no cost to the district due to corporate sponsors and community donations.
The sign will be used for notifications of school event and activities along with any closings.

Two people injured in Spiro house fire

January 22, 2013

Two people were flown by medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital after a house fire Monday night.
According to the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department, the fire happened on Stewart Loop near Spiro at approximately 8:30 p.m. Two people were injured, a woman and a man who were found lying on the ground outside the home unconscious.
According to emergency crews on the scene, the woman was seriously burned and is in critical condition. The man suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Several blood drives scheduled in county

Blood drives are scheduled at three locations in the coming weeks, according to the Oklahoma Blood Institute.
Carl Albert State College are inviting Poteau-area residents 16 years or older* to donate blood from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, or 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 1507 S. McKenna.
Arkoma High School will host a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at 100 Blocker.
Blood donors will receive a free T-shirt, health screenings and Donor Rewards points, redeemable for merchandise in OBI’s online store.

No school means more hang time for area skaters

Todd Mattox, 9, of Poteau spent Monday afternoon at the Poteau Skate Park. Area schools were closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Day. With a free day from school, several children spent the day perfecting tricks on skateboards, skates and bicycles.

Special Olympics hosts annual trivia night

Special Olympics supporters will hold their 15th annual trivia night fundraiser March 2.
This year's theme will be M*A*S*H.
The event will start at 7 p.m., with registration beginning at 6 p.m. in the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center.
Entry fee is $125 per team of six to 10 members.
Checks should be made payable to Special Olympics Oklahoma Area 10 and mailed to 801 South Blvd., Poteau OK 74953 before Feb. 25. Entries will also be accepted at the door on March 2.

House fire claims three lives; still under investigation

A house fire Saturday morning took the lives of three people - Paul and Levunia Helton, both 73, and their 2 year-old great grandson Riley Metzker.
According to the State Fire Marshal's Investigator, Tony Rust, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale said the fire began around 9:30 a.m. When firefighters from Shady Point, Latham / Dog Creek, Panama and Poteau arrived, the home was fully engulfed.
The bodies of the three victims have been sent to the Oklahoma Medical Examiners Office to determine the exact cause of death.

One arrested after officers allegedly find K2

A call about a possible drunk driver resulted in a K2 arrest in Poteau Saturday night.
Sean William Frier, 21, of Poteau, was arrested by Poteau officer Jerimy Emmert following a traffic stop at approximately 11:20 p.m. Saturday night.
According to the police department, a call was received about a possible drunk driver and Emmert stopped a vehicle matching the description. The driver, identified as Frier, was arrested for city warrants and possession of a controlled dangerous substance-K2.
Frier is being held in the LeFlore County Detention Center in lieu of $1,700 bail.

Sen. Inhofe meets with U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff

January 18, 2013

On Friday morning, Senator Jim Inhofe (Okla.) along with Senators Mark Pryor and John Boozman (Ark.) arrived in Fort Smith to meet with U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh III to discuss the impact of a recent defense budget cut that will affect the 188th Fighter Wing.
According to Inhofe, approximately 200-300 members of the 188th are Oklahoma residents. Of the 1000 jobs filled at the 188th, Inhofe said the cuts could affect 10 percent of employees.
The replacement of the A-10's with unmanned assault vehicles is the most likely change to expect, said Inhofe.

Drought conditions continue

The latest report from the United States Drought Monitor shows that despite recent precipitation this month, all of Oklahoma remains under sever drought. The LeFlore County area is listed as under extreme drought conditions.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, most of the state has been drought conditions since last May.
Reports show that drought conditions are expected to persist or intensify until spring rains bring relief.
