Balloon Fest only weeks away

Balloons may be the main attraction, but there will plenty to do on the ground as well at this year's Poteau Balloon Fest, scheduled Oct. 18-19.
“We have worked very hard to have activities and events for people of all ages," said Chris Ward, Poteau Chamber of Commerce board chairman.
This year’s event will include more than 30 teams competing in the KCBS BBQ Oklahoma State Championship Cook-Off, according to Chamber CEO Karen Wages.

Poteau Police Department home to new medication disposal site

The Poteau Police Department is now home to a prescription medication disposal container provided by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics.
The drop box arrived Tuesday along with OBN Director Darrell Weaver and a large group of area prevention representatives.
The Poteau Police Department location marks the 141st container placed in the state to help with the safe disposal of medication. Since the programs inception two years ago, more than 20 tons of unwanted medications have been collected, according to Weaver.

Vike@Nite early registration deadline nears

The Vike @ Nite Black Light Run is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Carl Albert State College in Poteau. 
Preregistration is open until Oct. 10 for an entry fee of $20, and $30 for registration thereafter. CASC students with a current student ID will pay an entry fee of $15. Registration forms can be found at www.carlalbert.edu or by contacting Hali Repass at hrepass@carlalbert.edu. Online registration is available at http://www.eventbrite.com/event/8189634417/es2/?rank=1. On-site registration will be from 3:30-4:30 p.m. the day of the race.

Local team takes second in triathlon

Team members Whitney Kirby, Hali Repass and Beth Phillips brought home medals for their second-place finish in the the Redman Triathalon held recently at Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City. About 30 LeFlore County residents participated in the event.

Poteau Fire Department participates in 'Fill the Boot'

Wear purple in support of domestic abuse victims

October 2, 2013

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and events are scheduled to help boost public awareness of the important topic.
The month-long emphasis kicks off on Thursday with “Wear Purple Day”. Everyone is encouraged to wear purple to show support for victims and survivors of domestic violence. Also Thursday is a press conference and awards ceremony at the State Capitol in Oklahoma City.

Jury convicts Simpson on two counts of murder

Breaking news:
The jury in the case of accused murderer Christopher Simpson returned a guilty verdict on two counts of murder. The jury announced its decision tonight (Thursday) shortly before 6. The jury recommended Simpson get life without parole.
Formal sentencing will be held Nov. 8 at 11 a.m.
Simpson was accused in the April 8, 2012, shooting death of 20-year-old Ka'Loni Flynn and her unborn child.

BREAKING NEWS: CASE GOES TO JURY - Accused murderer takes the witness stand Wednesday

Breaking news:
The jury in the case of accused murderer Christopher Simpson began deliberations about 11 a.m.

With the culmination of the state's presentation of trial evidence in the murder of 20-year-old Ka'Loni Flynn, the defense called multiple witnesses, the last being accused murder Christopher K. Simpson.
Simpson is accused in the April 8, 2012, shooting death of Flynn and her unborn child. Wednesday marked the fifth day of the trial.

Suddenlink holds customer appreciation day

Wesley McDonald, a broadband technician for Suddenlink, prepares a hamburger for Rhett Sulser of Poteau as part of Suddenlink’s annual customer appreciation event. Customers were invited to come by the company’s Poteau office for free hamburgers and hotdogs on Monday. Also on hand for the event were Suddenlink plant manager Perry Miller (behind McDonald) and customer service representative Pamela Hammerton (not pictured).

Spiro FUMC to host car show and breakfast

The dictionary defines them as “a thin cake made of batter, poured on a hot, greased skillet and cooked on both sides until brown."
You may have called them griddle cakes, flapjacks, an excuse for lots of syrup — maybe even pancakes. Whatever you call them, they will be great breakfast eating on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 7 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Spiro First United Methodist Church.
And that's just the start of a fun- and food-filled day as the annual Car and Arts and Crafts Shows get underway.
