Blood drives set this week, next

January 2, 2014

The need for blood doesn’t take a holiday. That’s why Oklahoma Blood Institute urges area residents to give this holiday week.
Poteau Chamber of Commerce will host a blood drive from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, at the chamber offices. Appointments are not required but can be made by calling (877) 340-8777 or visiting obi.org.
Carl Albert State College is starting off the new year by saving lives through blood donation next week on Tuesday, Jan. 7, in the ballroom from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Deadline nears in Shady Point special election

January 2, 2014

Time is getting short for Shady Point voters who wish to cast their ballot by absentee.
According to LeFlore County Election Board Secretary Sharon Steele, the ballots must be received by the election board no later than 7 p.m on Jan. 14. Due to time restrictions and mail service, the applications to get an absentee ballot is Jan. 8 at 5 p.m.
The special election will be held Jan. 14 and voters will decide who will fill the one-year unexpired trustee term. Candidates who cast their name into the race for the town position include Henry Wells and Leroy Smith.
