Hospital tax, school bond issues, Cockburn prevail

With all precincts reporting, LeFlore County voters overwhelmingly approved a half-penny sales tax to support Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center.
In unofficial results, the tally was 5,246 to 1,584, or a 76.8 percent margin in favor of the proposal.
In the LeFlore County Assessor's race, Brenda Cockburn beat Mindy White, 3,074 to 2,194 — a 58.4 percent margin.
Voters in Panama and Wister passed school bond issues.
The Wister vote was 411 to 206 — a 66.6 percent approval margin.
The Panama proposal had 64.7 percent of votes, 301 yes to 170 no.

LeFlore County residents vote today [Aug. 26] on a proposed half-cent sales to support Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center.
Also on the ballot are Democratic runoffs for county assessor, state superintendent of education and U.S. Senate. There are no Republican races on the ballot.
Also, voters in Panama and Wister will decide school bond issues.
The hospital tax and school bond issues are non-partisan proposals.
Polling places will be open form 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Authority to consider Oklahoma Capitol bonds

August 25, 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Capitol Improvement Authority is scheduled to consider a $120 million bond issue to pay for repairs and renovating of the state Capitol building.

The authority meets on Monday to consider seeking proposals for bond counsel and underwriters for the bond issue that was authorized by legislation signed into law by Gov. Mary Fallin in May.

The legislation authorized a 10-year, $120 million bond issue for Capitol improvements.

Proceeds benefit Women's Crisis Services of LeFore County.

Dr. John Montgomery Scholarship Banquet slated for Saturday

August 22, 2014

The third annual Dr. John Montgomery Scholarship Banquet, hosted by LeFlore County Branch NAACP, is slated for this weekend.
The banquet will start at 6 p.m. Saturday [Aug. 23] at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center.
Tickets are available at the Poteau Chamber of Commerce.
Adults are $25 and youths 17 and younger are $15. Corporate tables also are available.
This year's guest speaker is Dr. Paul Beran, chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith..

Time to Brave the Mud

August 22, 2014

The second annual Brave the Mud Run is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 at the LeFlore County Fairgrounds.
“Last year’s mud run reached well beyond our expectations. We raised over $12,000 for the shelter because of the overwhelming response we received,” said Glenda Wise, race director. All profits will go directly to the Leflore County Women’s Crisis Services.
