2 killed, 3 hurt in Oklahoma oil rig explosion

COALGATE, Okla. (AP) — An explosion and fire at a southeastern Oklahoma oil rig early Friday killed two workers and injured three others, two of them critically.

The explosion occurred around 1 a.m. on the deck of a rig about 2 miles west of Coalgate, a community about 100 miles southeast of Oklahoma City, said Sam Schafnitt, chief of operations for the state Fire Marshal's Office.

Schafnitt said the fire had been extinguished and that investigators from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration were helping investigate the cause of the explosion.

Prepackaged caramel apples linked to deaths, CDC reports

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are warning about commercially produced and prepackaged caramel apples that have been linked to five deaths and 28 total illnesses.

The CDC are teaming up with public health officials to investigate an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections that have been linked to the prepackaged caramel apples.

Inmates: State's lethal injection unconstitutional

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Lawyers for 21 death row inmates say Oklahoma's bungled execution in April is evidence they likely will experience pain and suffering from the state's lethal injection protocol.

Testimony is scheduled to continue Thursday in a federal court in Oklahoma City where the inmates are challenging the state's method of execution. Much of the case centers on the use of the sedative midazolam as the first in a three-drug combination.

Caden Place fundraiser set Friday

Local residents are invited to come out Friday afternoon for a fundraiser to benefit a 5-year-old boy diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Caden Alexander Place was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at 2-years-old. There will be a fundraiser to benefit Caden and his family at the LeFlore County Fairgrounds in Poteau Friday at 5 p.m. with prayer and fellowship.

Hamburgers and hotdogs will be served as well as a pie auction at 7 p.m., donations welcome.

No. 2 was "World Cup," the global soccer tournament held in Brazil in June. Third on the list was "Ebola," the highly contagious virus.

Indian Nation Turnpike travel plaza to open on Thursday

McALESTER, Okla. (AP) — Compressed natural gas fueling is one of the new features of a travel plaza along the Indian Nation Turnpike that's set to open Thursday at McAlester.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority says the rebuilt plaza will also feature a convenience store and restaurant. Construction along the turnpike also included pavement and bridge rehabilitation.

Last night's storm has blown down almost all the wreaths in every section of the Fort Smith National Cemetery that were laid on the headstones during Saturday’s Christmas Honors’ event. Volunteers are needed to stop by today to help reset the wreaths.
