Oklahoma school shelter advocates nearing deadline

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Supporters of an initiative petition to place storm shelters in every Oklahoma public school said Tuesday they are short of the number of signatures required to put the measure on a statewide ballot with just four weeks left to gather them.

Take Shelter Oklahoma is launching a final push to get the signatures of about 155,000 registered voters needed to get the measure on the ballot, said Oklahoma City attorney David Slane, who represents the organization. The deadline to turn the petitions in to the secretary of state is Oct. 20.

Oklahoma judge dismisses Ten Commandments lawsuit

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The privately funded Ten Commandments monument on the grounds of the Oklahoma Capitol does not violate the state constitution and can stay there, an Oklahoma County judge said Friday in a ruling that attorneys who filed the lawsuit vowed to appeal to the state Supreme Court.

District Judge Thomas Prince granted a motion filed on behalf of the Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission to block the lawsuit from going to trial.

Prison escapee in LeFlore County identified

Caleb A. Bates, 24, is described as 5'11" and weighs 169 lbs. with brown hair, blue eyes and tattoos on his arms and back, according to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections website.
At about 12:25 p.m. Thursday [Sept. 19] Bates reportedly walked away from work detail in Howe. He was last seen in the area of Texas Street walking west on the railroad tracks.
He was sentenced to 10 years for drug charges in Johnson County. He also has convictions of burglary and possession of stolen property.
Law enforcement still are searching the area for Bates.
