Caden Place fundraiser set Friday

Local residents are invited to come out Friday afternoon for a fundraiser to benefit a 5-year-old boy diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Caden Alexander Place was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at 2-years-old. There will be a fundraiser to benefit Caden and his family at the LeFlore County Fairgrounds in Poteau Friday at 5 p.m. with prayer and fellowship.

Hamburgers and hotdogs will be served as well as a pie auction at 7 p.m., donations welcome.

According to Google, which released a report Tuesday on the top trending terms of the year, the top term overall was "Robin Williams," after the well-known and popular comedian died in August. No. 2 was "World Cup," the global soccer tournament held in Brazil in June. Third on the list was "Ebola," the highly contagious virus.

Indian Nation Turnpike travel plaza to open on Thursday

McALESTER, Okla. (AP) — Compressed natural gas fueling is one of the new features of a travel plaza along the Indian Nation Turnpike that's set to open Thursday at McAlester.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority says the rebuilt plaza will also feature a convenience store and restaurant. Construction along the turnpike also included pavement and bridge rehabilitation.

Volunteers needed at National Cemetary to help with wreaths today

Last night's storm has blown down almost all the wreaths in every section of the Fort Smith National Cemetery that were laid on the headstones during Saturday’s Christmas Honors’ event. Volunteers are needed to stop by today to help reset the wreaths.

Group erects Nativity scene at governor's mansion

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Leaders representing multiple faiths could approach Gov. Mary Fallin for the chance to display religious icons at the Oklahoma governor's mansion after she invited a Christian group to erect a Nativity scene there, civil libertarians warned Friday.

Kathie Jackson, a retiree who formed the Nativity Committee of Tulsa, requested that the scene be displayed at the state Capitol, but said Fallin offered to have it put up on the mansion lawn. The scene was assembled Thursday.

Crafts with Mona set tomorrow at the library

Tomorrow is your last chance to learn how to make arts and crafts out of paper and book pages at the Patrick Lynch Public Library for "A Book Page Christmas Crafts with Mona."

The craft class is at 5 p.m. Friday in the library community room in Poteau. Mona Goodrich will teach partakers how to create various book-page made crafts by recycling pages from discarded books. Goodrich had several of her items displayed in her first craft class such as book-page holiday wreaths, ornaments, flowers and butterflies.
