Hundreds of people spent the day at the Eastern Oklahoma Ag Trade Show held at the LeFlore County fairgrounds Tuesday [April 8] afternoon.

Panama residents under boil order

April 8, 2014

Panama residents are under a boil order as of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday after a sewer line and water line were broken in the same location.
Panama Chief of Police John Whiteaker said the Panama Water Department has issued the boil order until further notice.

Poteau police respond to rollover accident

Poteau Police and Fire are responding to a two-vehicle accident at the corner of Holson and Harper Avenues in Poteau [April 7 5:20 p.m.]
One vehicle is reported to have flipped onto its top and one person possibly injured.

Voters may decide hospital's fate

Representatives of Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center, the LeFlore County Hospital Authority and other medical providers spoke to the LeFlore County Commissioners Monday regarding a vote for a half cent sales tax to support the hospital.
Further discussion is planned after the representatives of the hospital provide the commissioners with detailed information about the expenditures of the money being sought before they will vote on an election resolution.

Filing period begins Wednesday

April 7, 2014

More than 500 candidates are expected to file for 2014 state and federal elections April 9-11 at the State Capitol in Oklahoma City.
Filing will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday in the north hall of the Capitol’s second floor outside Room 230.
To download a candidate filing packet or get other information about the filing period, visit the state Election Board’s website: http://elections.ok.gov.

City of Poteau to hold business meetings Monday evening

The Poteau Industrial Authority, Water Authority and City Council will hold their regular monthly meeting tonight [April 7] at City Hall beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Johnathen Thacker pleads guilty, escapes death penalty

April 4, 2014

Johnathen Don James Edward Thacker pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree murder, escaping a possible death sentence for the 2010 slaying of 22-year-old Briana Ault.
In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors accepted a sentence of life without parole for Thacker and dropped a forcible sodomy charge against him.
Thacker's brother, Elvis Aaron Thacker, 26, still faces trial and a potential death sentence in the case.
The Arkansas brothers were charged in September 2010 after the Fort Smith, Ark., woman's body was found in Pocola.

PARTS OF SOUTHEAST OKLAHOMA AND THROUGH PARTS OF WESTERN ARKANSAS.

THROUGH 1:30 PM... RAIN AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO
CONTINUE RACING TOWARD THE NORTHEAST INTO SOUTHEAST OKLAHOMA AND

LeFlore County under severe thunderstorm warning

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for LeFlore County this morning until 9:45 a.m. for the threat of severe weather which is potentially on the way.

Talihina candidates tie; Pocola bond fails

April 2, 2014

A drawing will determine the winner of the Talihina clerk-treasurer's election.
Gena Russell Jones and Trevor Kent Patterson each received 19 votes Tuesday. The remaining candidate, Becky Edwards, received three votes.
There will not be a run-off election, according to the Election Board.
A Pocola school bond proposal failed to received the required 60 percent of the vote to pass.
The proposal sought $4.48 million for school improvements.
