Authority to consider Oklahoma Capitol bonds

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Capitol Improvement Authority is scheduled to consider a $120 million bond issue to pay for repairs and renovating of the state Capitol building.

The authority meets on Monday to consider seeking proposals for bond counsel and underwriters for the bond issue that was authorized by legislation signed into law by Gov. Mary Fallin in May.

The legislation authorized a 10-year, $120 million bond issue for Capitol improvements.

Brave the Mud Run a success

Dr. John Montgomery Scholarship Banquet slated for Saturday

The third annual Dr. John Montgomery Scholarship Banquet, hosted by LeFlore County Branch NAACP, is slated for this weekend.
The banquet will start at 6 p.m. Saturday [Aug. 23] at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center.
Tickets are available at the Poteau Chamber of Commerce.
Adults are $25 and youths 17 and younger are $15. Corporate tables also are available.
This year's guest speaker is Dr. Paul Beran, chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith..

Time to Brave the Mud

The second annual Brave the Mud Run is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 at the LeFlore County Fairgrounds.
“Last year’s mud run reached well beyond our expectations. We raised over $12,000 for the shelter because of the overwhelming response we received,” said Glenda Wise, race director. All profits will go directly to the Leflore County Women’s Crisis Services.

Poteau Fire fights large blaze

Poteau Fire responded to a large grass fire, including a hay bailer that was engulfed in flames, on old Oklahoma Highway 112 near Double Branch Church Friday about 2:30 p.m.

2nd case of West Nile confirmed in Oklahoma

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Health officials in Tulsa have confirmed a second human case of the potentially fatal West Nile virus in Oklahoma this year.

The Tulsa Health Department confirmed the case on Thursday. The first confirmed case was in July in Major County.

Few details about the persons infected have been released, other than that both are over the age of 50.

There were 84 cases of West Nile virus in Oklahoma last year, including eight deaths.

Twin missing girls found, are OK

A Heavener mother can now rest easier. The twin daughters of Angela Delao of Heavener, 15-year-old twins Jasmine and Jessica, who went missing Saturday were found Wednesday alive and well.
