Three people arrested in Spiro drug raid

August 17, 2012

Three people were arrested after the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department served a narcotics search warrant Tuesday.
Donna Sue Stone, 51, Blake Fuller, 23, and Samuel James Hendrix, 21, all of Spiro, were arrested on drug and weapons charges stemming from the search of a home located on State Highway 271 east of Spiro.
Deputies reportedly found prescription pills, marijuana and loaded firearms, one of which was reported stolen.

Early voting in Runoff State Primary Election slated to begin next week

Oklahoma’s state Runoff Primary Election is less than two weeks away and early voters can cast their ballot as early as Friday, August 24.
According to the LeFlore County Election Board, local voters will go to the polls to vote for three races and a special election. The runoff between democratic candidates Bruce Curnutt and Rob Seale in the race for LeFlore County Sheriff along with both republican and democratic races in the seat for U.S. Representative District 2. The voters of Pocola will vote in a special election to determine who will fill the vacant position of Trustee Ward 4.

EMS meeting set for Monday

The LeFlore County EMS Board will meet at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at 1215 S. Broadway in Poteau.
The Agenda:
Call meeting to order.
Roll call of board members.
Approve consent agenda:
• minutes of July 19 special meeting.
• blanket purchase order.
• claims for payment.
• previously paid claims.
Director report.
Discuss and vote to approve transfer of money to building account.
Update on Station 2 construction.
Open and award radio bid.
Discuss and vote on going to bid for purchase of new ambulance.
Discuss and vote on EMS financial plan.

Hospital Board to meet Tuesday

The LeFlore County Hospital Authority Governing Board will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21 in Confrence Room “C” at Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center.
Agenda:
Call to Order/Approval of Minutes.
Roll Call/Establishment of a quorum.
Consideration and possible approval of minutes of previous regular meeting 07/17/12.
Administrative Reports.
Summary of Clinical Operations and HCAHPS Quartrly Results.
Presentation and possible approval of monthly financial reports.
Financial report and discussion with possible action on payments of Treasurer.

Tourism department comments on Wister lights

On Wednesday the Poteau Chamber of Commerce issued a press release regarding the Christmas light display at Wister lake State Park. The press release stated that park officials had informed organizers that the staff would no longer help put up the display or help in any manner that might require manpower from any park employee.
On Thursday the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department responded to what tourism officials felt were allegations made towards them by the Poteau Chamber.

Wister Lake holiday tradition in danger of being cancelled

According to Karen Wages, CEO of the Poteau Chamber of Commerce, the popular Christmas season tradition "Lights on the Island" may burn out this year at Wister Lake State Park due to the lack of manpower.
Wister Lake park officials informed organizers that the park staff would no longer help put up the Christmas lights display or help in any manner that might require manpower from any park employee. 
“This is an extremely disappointing turn of events”, said Karen Wages with the Poteau Chamber of Commerce”. 

Officers bid farewell to fallen canine partner

Panama Police Officer Andy Bevil and several others said farewell to Creed, police dog and Bevil's partner during a memorial service held Wednesday morning at the Panama First Baptist Church.
Creed was found murdered at Bevil's residence on Aug. 5. His murder is still under investigation.
Members of the Fort Smith Police Department's Honor Guard and canine unit were present to honor his memory.
There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the person(s) responsible for Creed's death.

Recent rainfall not enough to life burn ban

Although the area saw substantial rainfall last week, it was confirmed during the Monday morning LeFlore County Commissioner meeting that the burn ban would remain in effect in conjunction with the Governor's burn ban.
According to Michael Davidson, Director of LeFlore County Emergency Management, the Governor's burn ban is scheduled to expire in two weeks if it isn't reinstated. The commissioners agreed to maintain the local ban until it is determined if the upcoming significant weather changes would affect the state ban.

The first facility was built in September of 1984.  Since that time the Brook’s have re-designed the entire facility for a state of the art dining experience. 

Local family opens a new track for motor sports enthusiasts

The Tanguay family of Poteau are lovers of dirt tracks and motor sports. So when the opportunity to open Raceday Park east of Poteau to provide a riding experience for local families, they couldn't wait to start.
"It's a passion of ours to give families a place to ride," said Jace Tanguay, owner of RDP. "It has been three years in the making but it is now open."
Jace and his sons Triston, 12, and Trace,19, are all avid riders who compete and ride for fun. His wife Sheila is responsible for coordinating races and events at RDP.
