Several live performances were given Thursday during the Christmas Open House hosted by The Community State Bank in Poteau.
Linzy Blankenship played the guitar and sang as Leah Peters harmonized backup vocals.

Abuse case escalates in Courthouse parking lot

The family of a Poteau man convicted of child abuse and in court for a recent domestic abuse case was involved in an altercation with the alleged victim Thursday morning.
Ashley Marie Cox, of Heavener, appeared in LeFlore County District Court as a witness against her former husband Jeremiah Cox, 33, of Poteau. Jeremiah Cox, who was convicted of child abuse last year, appeared in court for a recent domestic abuse case in which his former wife was the victim.

Town of Pocola faces fines for failure to pay IRS

The Town of Pocola may find themselves owing the Internal Revenue Service more than $8,000 for unpaid back taxes.
According to Town Clerk John Limbocker, the problem occurred when the previous Deputy Clerk, Sally Deselms, failed to keep her records up to date. Limbocker said the problem has since been solved after Deselms was replaced six weeks ago with Amanda Goldsmith.
According to Limbocker, $8,200 is the financial burden the town may have to pay in interest after being fined and penalized for failure to pay taxes.

Young performers entertain during Christmas open house at The Community State Bank

Hundreds of children filled the lobby of The Community State Bank Wednesday as school children sang Christmas carols and had their picture taken with Santa Claus.
The open house will also be held Thursday from 9:15 a.m. until 2:15 p.m.
Thursday's entertainers include students from Cameron, The Methodist Church, Choctaw Headstart, Kibois Headstart, Monroe and Poteau. Also performing is the Clark family, Makala Wood, 4His Glory, Leah Peters and Linzy Blankenship and Holly Cinocca.

Friends of the Library hold Sheet Sale event

The Friends of the Library support group is hosting a sheet sale from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Days Inn & Suites in Poteau. The sheets are Egyptian cotton 1,200-thread count. Twin sets are $35, full and queen $40, and king and California king are $45.
Proceeds from the sheet sale will go toward furnishing the Patrick Lynch Public Library so that it may open as scheduled in May.

Poteau may soon have sign restriction ordinance

On Monday night, the Poteau City Council addressed the issue of temporary signs, such as garage sale and political, that remain posted after the event is over.
According to Poteau Mayor Jeff Shockley, he and city attorney Marc Bovos, have been asked to research ordinances and to use that knowledge to create an ordinance for Poteau.
Shockley said an example of an ordinance would limit political signs from being placed earlier than 30 days before the election and must be removed within 48 hours after the election. Garage sale signs would have a 48 hour window either way.
