Cavanal Killer underway

More than 400 runners and walkers are making the 5-mile trek to the top of the World's Highest Hill today [May 10, 9:40 a.m.] during the 7th annual Cavanal Killer.
The race started in the 400 block of Hughes Drive in Poteau at 9:30 a.m.

Jury says guilty

A LeFlore County jury returned a guilty verdict Friday [May 9] afternoon in the trial of Raymond Larry Nichols, 61, of Cameron.
Nichols shot Poteau business owner Joe Neff then disposed of his body in a Pocola strip pit in 2009.
The trial began Wednesday.

Jail looses more employees

The LeFlore County Detention Center Trust approved laying off 10 employees due to financial issues caused by the loss of state-reimbursed inmates costs.
The jail lost about two-thirds of its annual budget after the Department of Corrections removed county-housed state inmates back to state prisons.
The layoffs reportedly began Thursday [May 8].

LCPBA schedules special meeting for jail funds

The LeFlore County Public Building Authority announced Thursday [May 8] they would hold a special meeting Monday, May 12, at 8:45 at the courthouse.
The board is set to discuss reimbursing the LeFlore County Detention Center for building related expenses.

Nichols trial continues with expert witness testimony

The second day [May 8] of the Raymond Larry Nichols murder trial is underway as expert witnesses take the stand for the prosecution.
Nichols is accused of the 2009 slaying of Joe Neff, of Poteau.
Testimony was heard from an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Forensic expert, a District Attorney's Investigator and an owner of an area pawn shop.
Testimony is expected to be heard from the Oklahoma Medical Examiners Office later today.

Nichols murder trial begins

The trial of 61-year-old accused murderer Raymond Larry Nichols will begin at 9 a.m. today [May 7] at the LeFlore County Courthouse.
Nichols is accused of the 2009 slaying of Poteau businessman Joe Neff.

Spiro Mounds holds Archaeology Day

Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center will hold its 9th annual Archaeology Day on May 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Spiro Mounds site celebrates its 36th year of increasing awareness of Oklahoma archaeology. As a bonus Archaeology Day also will be a free day with no entrance fees collected, although donations are gratefully accepted.
Lectures will be featured during the day, including a talk on Fort Coffee and the Fort Coffee Choctaw Boys Academy at 1 p.m. Manager Dennis Peterson will lead a guided tour of the site at 2 p.m. The regular exhibits will be available throughout the day as well.

White squirrel caught on film

A white squirrel bounds across the grass near The Community State Bank on north Broadway. According to several online sources, most white squirrels are not albino, but light-colored versions of gray squirrels.

Benefit for Jim Craig soon to start

Don't forget the benefit pie auction and dinner to help offset medical expenses of Jim Craig, investigator with the LeFlore County District Attorney's Office.
Craig was diagnosed with cancer in November.
The event is from 5-7 p.m. today [May 2] with the pie auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event is being held at the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center at Poteau High School.
Dinner includes a choice between a hamburger or hotdog, chips and drink for $5.

GTCT to perform "Our Town"

Good Times Community Theatre League presents a charming slice of life tale in Thornton Wilder’s Classic Our Town. Directed by Good Times veteran Darrell Plummer, Jr., this production is sure to please all ages.
Performances are Saturday, May 10, 2014, at 7 p.m., Sunday, May 11, at 2 p.m., and Monday, May 12, at 7 p.m., at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Poteau.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Advance tickets and more information may be obtained by calling Good Times Community Theatre League at (918) 647-3079.
