The Board of Trustees for the Poteau Public Works Authority, Poteau, Oklahoma will meet at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, April 2,2012 at Poteau City Hall, 111 Peters St., Poteau, Oklahoma for a regularly scheduled meeting.

Order of Business

1. Call to order.
2. Roll call.
3. Consideration/action to accept and approve the consent agenda:
A. Approve minutes for the March 5, 2012 meeting.
B. Approve payment of purchase orders as signed and approved by the finance committee.
C. Approve acceptance of department reports.
D. Approve budget transfers for the month of March 2012.

Students given a taste of what drunk driving can do

Every 51 minutes, one person is dying due to an alcohol related crash. This statistic was dramatically demonstrated to Bokoshe students Wednesday afternoon during Bokoshe Public Schools drunk driving awareness day.
Arkoma Chief of Police Daniel New and Arkoma police officer John Buszek spent the day at the high school educating students on the dangers of drunk driving. A short presentation was given during the morning and the all day, the Grim Reaper stalked the halls, pulling students out of class to represent a death due to an alcohol related accident.

Poteau Bremner plant to close at the end of May

A local business has officially informed it's nearly 240 employees their services will no longer be needed as of May 31 when the facility plans to close their doors.
Bremner Food Group, located at 400 Industrial Blvd., in Poteau, is a division of the St. Louis based Ralcorp Holdings and on Wednesday afternoon Ralcorp Vice President of Human Resources, Steve Smith, confirmed the plant would close.

Proposition 4 passes by 44 votes

The Poteau Special Election for the Proposition 4 hotel/motel tax has resulted in a pass vote with an in-official total of 433 votes for the tax and 389 votes against.

Changes coming to annual rodeo in Poteau

The name change of a local annual event has caused a stir among the residents of Poteau and the surrounding area but even though the name has changed it will not be forgotten.
The announcement that the 2012 rodeo held at the LeFlore County Fairgrounds would now be hailed the Poteau Frontier Rodeo rather than the Phil Gardenhire PRCA Rodeo. But the management behind the decision would like to assure those who attend the rodeo, while the name has returned to it's original state of decades ago, Gardenhire will continue to be memorialized nightly during the event.

Angler lands new Oklahoma state record largemouth bass

A new Oklahoma state record largemouth bass was caught Friday, March 23, at Cedar Lake in southeast Oklahoma. The fish weighed 14 lbs. 12.3 oz. and was caught by Poteau angler Benny Williams, Jr. while on a camping trip at the 78-acre LeFlore Co. lake.
Williams caught the bass at 11 a.m. on a ¼ oz. Striker King jig. This fish measured 26 inches in length and 22 3/8 inches in girth.
Williams' fish breaks a state record held since 1999 when William Cross caught a 14-lb. 11.52-oz. bass from Broken Bow Lake.

First degree manslaughter filed in Talihina fatality

A Talihina woman has been formally charged with first degree manslaughter charges following the results of an analysis of her blood after a fatal collision in September.
Jacqueline Renee Harjo, 44, of Talihina, is facing two charges stemming from the accident, Manslaughter first degree and driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.
According to the affidavit in the case, Harjo was driving a 1994 Ford pickup south bound on U.S. Highway 271 near Cox Lane when she crossed the center lane and struck a north bound Lincoln Town Car driven by Galen Benton.

Unemployment released

According to a report by the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, LeFlore County has been ranked 70 out of Oklahoma's 77 counties in terms of employment for January 2012. Only six other counties reported a worse unemployment rate that LeFlore County with Latimer County holding the highest rate across the state.
Out of an estimated labor force of 19,017 workers, 17,184 were employed, leaving 1,833 LeFlore County citizens without jobs, raising the unemployement rate from 8.7 percent in December to the current 9.6 percent..
