Publisher apologizes for production problems

November 1 wasn't a great day to be in the newspaper business … in Poteau anyway.
Due to a variety of malfunctions the Nov. 2 newspaper didn't get printed until incredibly late. Quite a few of the papers have messed up page numbers due to a mechanical failure in the printing press. We ended up having to run some the papers in two sections and some of the pages got renumbered, or had the numbers removed in the process. All the news is there. The main problem is that the stories jumping from page one jump to page 8 instead of page 16 in many of the newspapers.

Poteau hotel robbed Monday night

A clerk at the Days Inn and Suites of Poteau escaped without injury during a robbery Monday night.
According to Poteau Chief of police Stephen Fruen, the two men entered the hotel while the clerk was in a room near the front desk. When she heard a noise, she went to investigate and she discovered one man behind the front counter taking money and another standing in the lobby.
The clerk locked herself in a bathroom and called police.
The two men fled the scene with an undetermined amount of money and were not apprehended.
The robbery still is under investigation.

Area business owner arrested on sex crimes warrant

Area business owner, William Joseph LeRoux Jr., 47, of Hodgen, was arrested Monday night on a sex crimes warrant issued in Arizona.
LeRoux has been charged with 12 counts of sexual conduct with a minor and three counts of public sexual indecency. He is being held in the LeFlore County Detention Center without bail pending transport to Maricopa County, Ariz., to stand trial.
LeRoux opened the web-based business, 701 Corp., on Dewey Avenue in Poteau two years ago after relocating to Oklahoma.

Halloween Skate Bash

Tre Freeman, 18, of Fort Smith, shows off his skateboarding skills Saturday at the Poteau Skate Park during the Halloween Skate Bash sponosored by the Nashoba Youth Foundation. Lisa Fabian, founder of the foundation, said money raised from the event will go to help at-risk youth.

Trick or treating for a cause

October 26, 2012

Poteau High School Thespian Troupe 3283 has announced its participation in the Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat program sponsored by the International Thespian Society and the Educational Theatre Association.
On October 31, Troupe members will be out among area trick-or-treaters collecting dry and canned food for donation to the Kibois food pantry.

Missouri issues Amber Alert; driver may come to Oklahoma

An Amber Alert has been issued in Missouri in connection with the assault and abduction of 5-year-old Abigail Berthoff on Wednesday morning in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
She is a biracial female with black hair and brown eyes and last was seen wearing a pink nightgown.
The suspected kidnapper is Jeffrey Shelton, 45, who is a white male, believed to be 6 feet, 175 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. Shelton is a registered sex offender and officials believe he may travel to Oklahoma from Poplar Bluff.

Candidates sound off

With two weeks to go before the general election, area residents heard candidates in five key races speak at Tuesday's 2012 LeFlore County Political Forum. Candidates or their spokespersons represented their views in the contests for state House District 3, county sheriff, County Commissioner District 2, state Senate District 2, state Senate District 5 and U.S. House District 2.

Protectors Motorcycle Association Media Officer Ima Clubb, second from right, congratulates the winners of the first Bikes, Balloons and Barbecue poker run Saturday. The winners were, from left second-place winner Curt Haney of Poteau, first-place winner Kenny Hackett of Tulsa, and third-place winner Dena LaFever of Chickasha. The run began and ended at the Poteau Daily News parking lot and included several stops along the Talimena Scenic Drive.
