Congratulations to Luman-Barnes on their engagement

Stephanie Luman and Brice Barnes would like to announce their engagement and approaching marriage. 

The bride-elect is the daughter of Krista and Shayne Liles of Poteau and Wayne Luman of Wister. She is the granddaughter of Mike and Denise Russell of Poteau and Harril Luman of Wister. She is a 2011 graduate of Poteau High School and a 2013 graduate of Carl Albert State College.

Sheriff: 24 cow heads illegally dumped near Arkansas River

SALLISAW, Okla. (AP) — Authorities in eastern Oklahoma have cited a man who they say illegally dumped 24 cow heads and 3 dead calves near a dam along the Arkansas River.

Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart says the man from Muldrow was cited Sunday with illegal dumping. His identity hasn't been released.

The remains were found Saturday near at trash bin close to the Robert S. Kerr Dam near Sallisaw. Lockhart says about 14 of the cows had ear tags and it appears they were butchered for meat.

Senate passes bill approving Keystone XL oil pipeline

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-controlled Senate on Thursday approved a bipartisan bill to construct the Keystone XL oil pipeline, defying a presidential veto threat and setting up the first of many battles with the White House over energy and the environment.

The 62-36 vote advanced a top priority of the newly empowered GOP, and marked the first time the Senate passed a bill authorizing the pipeline, despite numerous attempts to force President Barack Obama's hand on the issue. Nine Democrats joined with 53 Republicans to back the measure.

Ouachita, Ozark-St. Francis forests begin prescribed burns

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — The Ouachita and Ozark-St. Francis national forests will be conducting prescribed burns in Arkansas and Oklahoma over the next several months.

Park authorities announced the burns on Thursday.

The burns are designed to re-establish fire's natural role in the forest ecosystem, improve forest health and reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfires. Prescribed burns are conducted when conditions indicate that there will be minimal impact to the public.

Noted death penalty abolitionist seeks Oklahoma moratorium

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Noted author and death penalty abolitionist Sister Helen Prejean is urging Oklahomans to reconsider the death penalty while the Supreme Court decides whether the state's lethal injection method is constitutional.

The Roman Catholic nun and author of the book "Dead Man Walking" joined a group of death penalty opponents Monday calling on Oklahomans to consider joining the 18 states that have abolished it. The group also delivered more than 30,000 online petition signatures to Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin's office.
