LeFlore County Hospital Authority to meet regarding shutdown

The LeFlore County Hospital Authority will meet today [Tuesday, Feb. 18] at 1 p.m. in the second floor conference room of Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center.
Discussion will include the recent survey results by the Oklahoma State Department of Health and the hospital's plan of action in correcting the listed deficiencies.

EOMC faced with surgical, obstetrical department shutdowns

Child birth and surgeries are on hold at Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center after a state-mandated shut down.
According to EOMC Medical Director B. Don Schumpert, the shutdown was the result of an Oklahoma State Health Department visit.

One injured, one cited in head-on crash

A head-on collision sent one man to the hospital and resulted in another man being ticketed.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a Dodge Durango driven by a Bokoshe man was headed north on U.S. Highway 59 and crossed the center line striking a Fiat driven by an Antlers man.
The Antlers man was taken by LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services to Sparks Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark.
According to the OHP, the driver of the Durango was not injured but received a ticket for driving left of center.

Democrats support teacher rally

Three area legislators — all former educators — joined other House Democrats Thursday to blast Republican lawmakers who Tuesday condemned public school teachers who plan to rally at the State Capitol next month.
“We hear a lot of talk at the state Capitol about local control,” Rep. Curtis McDaniel said, “but when it comes time to actually let our communities and school districts make choices for themselves, suddenly some members of the majority party condemn them.”

Harris gets formal death sentence

Donnie Lee Harris Jr., 29, of Talihina, was formally sentenced to death by a LeFlore County District Court judge Tuesday for the first degree murder of his girlfriend, Kristi Ferguson, who was 25 at the time of her death.
Harris is accused of setting Ferguson on fire after dousing her with gasoline on Feb. 18, 2012. The couple were inside a home in Talihina when Harris set the fire, leaving several other people endangered when the home caught fire. Ferguson succumbed to her injuries in an Oklahoma City Hospital.

Police v. deputies in basketball benefit

The Poteau Police Department squared off against the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department Saturday afternoon in a first-of-its-kind basketball tournament.
The event raised funds to assist with the county canine unit. More than $1,400 was raised Saturday.
During the event, a narcotics police dog demonstrated his ability to find hidden drugs.
The County Heat came away with the win.
Members of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, LeFlore County Emergency Management and other area law enforcement agencies also played on the two teams.

Polls open Tuesday in annual School Board Elections

Voters will be flocking to the pollsTuesday as the annual School Board Elections take full swing.
Polling places will open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Five area school districts have races slated today for the Office 4 seat, also the Office 3 seat in Wister.
• Wister — Office 3 — Kerry Ford and Leon Mitchell
• Wister — Office 4 —Billy DeWade Shatswell and Lamar Ford.
Candidates for the other four races are:
• Bokoshe — Vickie Sales and Ronnie Kingsboro.
• Leflore — Samuel Ingle and Tommy Wheat
• Poteau — William C. Pickle and Sally Ann Hutchinson.

Winter weather advisory issued

February 10, 2014

A winter weather advisory continues for LeFlore County as more snow is expected to hit the area.
The advisory was issued Monday [Feb. 10] and is expected to expire at 10 a.m. Tuesday after about two inches of snow cover the county.
The National Weather Service said Monday the heaviest accumulations of wintry precipitation is expected to take place along and south of Interstate 40 in southeastern Oklahoma and west central Arkansas

Poteau home destroyed by fire

February 9, 2014

Poteau firefighters still are battling a blaze that engulfed a home near Frisco Avenue in Poteau Sunday at about 3:30 p.m.
A family member of the residents, who were not home at the time of the fire, said several people lived at the home.

LeFlore County under winter weather advisory

February 7, 2014

According to the National Weather Service: Winter weather advisory is in effect from oon today until 10 p.m. tonight for LeFlore, Latimer, Haskell, Pushmatah, Choctaw, Pittsburg and Sequoyah Counties in Oklahoma. In Arkansas counties included in the advisory are: Sebastian, Crawford and Franklin Counties.
