Gas prices below $2 a gallon in Texas, Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gas has dropped below $2 a gallon at a handful of stations in Oklahoma and Texas this week, a level that a price-watching group says is the lowest in the nation and a bargain that's proven irresistible to some long lines of drivers coming from miles away to fill up.

Patrick DeHaan with GasBuddy.com said early Friday that three Oklahoma City stations were the only ones in the United States with sub-$2 gas. A Texas station also later dropped its price below that level.

"The Swan" takes centerstage tonight in Poteau [Dec.3]

Christian comedian Dennis Swanberg will be live in Poteau tonight [Dec.3] for "A Night with the Swan."

Doors open at the Donald W. Reynolds Center at 5:30 p.m. The event will feature a gospel concert from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Swanberg following with words of inspiration, one liners and story telling. The "Southern Gospel Holiday Homecoming" will feature local Southern Gospel groups and soloists such as the Gloryland Singers, In One Accord, Simply Blessed and the Southside Praise Team.

Holiday desserts, coffee and cider will be served complimentary during the event.

Fire crews battling house fire

Several area fire departments are responding to a house fire on Gatlin Lane between Monroe and Howe. The fire was reported at about 1:40 p.m. [Dec. 3].
Poteau, Monroe and Howe Fire Departments are on scene.

Oral arguments held for Capitol repair challenge

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A planned $120 million bond issue to repair the nearly 100-year-old state Capitol is not an unconstitutional special law and should be allowed to go forward, attorneys for the state argued Tuesday.

Oklahoma Supreme Court Referee Greg Albert also heard arguments from Oklahoma City attorney Jerry Fent, who claims the bill authorizing the bond issue is unconstitutional because it addressed only one state building.

Archaeology update slated for Tuesday meeting

The Poteau Valley Improvement Authority will meet Tuesday [Dec. 2] at 7 p.m. at Poteau City Hall.
The members will receive an archaeology update of Wister Lake by Ken Shingeton with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They also will receive an update on the Quarry Island Cove Alum project and lake modeling and sediment analysis.
Also on the agenda:
Discussion and action on bids to sale 2003 F150 truck.
Discuss and action to use, on trial basis, aeration equipment for the Poteau tower.
Discuss and action on health insurance and appointment of members to personnel committee.

Poteau Council to discuss property cleanup

December 1, 2014

The Poteau City Council will meet Monday [Dec. 1] night at 7 p.m. at Poteau City Hall.
The council will discuss cleanup of properties in the city. Properties on the agenda include 606 Dewey Avenue, 603 No. B Dewey Avenue and 113 Burkle Street.
Also to be discussed is the possible purchase of property adjacent to PARC.
The Poteau Public Works Authority and the Poteau Industrial Authority also will meet.

Sallisaw man pleads guilty to federal crimes

December 1, 2014

Muskogee — The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, announced that Christopher Jacob Froehlich, age 28, of Sallisaw, pled guilty to three counts of wire fraud, two counts of aggravated identity theft and one count of uttering a counterfeit security with intent to deceive.
The charges arose from an investigation by the United States Postal Inspector and the United States Secret Service.
