Student saves secretary from choking on her lunch

ENID, Okla. (AP) — A Waller Middle School student was recently given a special award from Enid Fire Department for his fast action to save the life of a school secretary.

Fire Marshal Ken Helms and Assistant Fire Chief Bill Burkhart gave Jake Pearson, a Waller eighth-grader, and school counselor Juliann Koehn plaques for "courageously providing a life-saving service to a member of our community."

Abandoned coal mines restored to native condition

SALLISAW, Okla. (AP) — The Cherokee Nation and the U.S. Department of Interior have worked to transform about 100 acres of former abandoned coal mines in Sequoyah County to a swath with lush bluestem and other native grass, a 25-acre lake and wildlife.

The tribe worked with the federal agency for the past year to replace high, dangerous embankments and fill in strip pits to restore the area back to productive, usable land.

Vike@Nite 5K set for tomorrow

The Vike@Nite 5k is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. at Carl Albert State College in Poteau. 

Tatur Racing will be chip timing and is limited to the first 300 registrations. Packet pick-up for those already registered will be at the Hamilton Complex from noon to 5:30 p.m. Thursday. For those still needing to register, on-site registration is from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Thursday for $20.

Those signing up on-sight will not receive a race shirt but will get medals, chip timing and a post-race meal.

Berestain Bears live in Poteau

The Berestain Bears are set to be live in Poteau this weekend.

Shows start at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, October 26 in the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Tickers are $10 all ages and include VIP meet-and-greet.

The Berestain Bears are part of a popular children's book series and have been featured in dolls, games, puzzles and animated cartoons. The show is an adaptation of the classic children's book series by Stan and Jan Berenstain.

Oklahoma Guard: No injuries after midair collision

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Two Oklahoma Air National Guard F-16 fighter jets flying a training exercise out of Tulsa collided in midair over southern Kansas, causing one of the pilots to eject from the aircraft.

Oklahoma National Guard spokesman Col. Max Moss says neither pilot was seriously injured in the collision Monday afternoon southwest of Howard, Kansas.

Moss says the pilot of one jet was able to return to Tulsa International Airport and landed safely. That aircraft was met on the tarmac by several fire and rescue vehicles.
