Job Connect event slated for July 15

The Choctaw Nation will host a job connect event July 15 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Choctaw Nation Community Centers in Poteau and Spiro.

Review of allegations against State Trooper confirmed

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has confirmed a Trooper level review of allegations brought forth against State Trooper Daniel Martin.

A complaint alleged that Martin, during the first days of Cadet Lawmen academy, shared an inappropriate adult photo (not of himself) to another Trooper. The incident was reported to Academy staff. It was decided that since Trooper Martin's son was in attendance at the academy, it would be in best interest to release Trooper Martin from this special assignment.

Historical Society looking for adoptees

The LeFlore County Historical Society is seeking help to return vintage awnings to the exterior of the Hotel Lowrey.
How can you help? Adopt an awning.
"The price [$400] includes one awning and a one-year membership to the LeFlore County Historical Society," said Lori Rutledge, society director. "We are going to start with the third-floor windows on Dewey Avenue first and then work our way to the third floor windows on the Witte Street side."
The Society hopes to replace all awnings.

Mo Bandy to perform July 12

Friends of the Heavener Runestone are hosting a benefit concert this weekend to raise funds for park operations.
Country music star Moe Bandy will play Saturday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Poteau. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m.
Advance tickets are $30 for premium and $20 general; box office prices will be $35 and $25, respectively.

One trapped in two-car wreck

About 4 p.m. today [July 11], Poteau police investigated a two-car accident at the Hardy and Cruce Street intersection.
According to police, the pickup failed to stop for a stop sign.
Both passengers in the car were taken by LeFlore County EMS to an area hospital.

Joe Neff murderer sentenced to life

July 10, 2014

The murderer of Poteau businessman Joe Neff will spend life behind bars after being sentenced today [July 10].
Raymond Larry Nichols, 61, of Cameron, was convicted in May of the 2009 murder of Poteau businessman Joe Neff.
Nichols was sentenced to life in prison without parole by District Judge Jon Sullivan.

'Tuck in' program seeking volunteers

Peachtree Hospice Poteau is seeking volunteers to take part in their "Tuck In Program."
The volunteers will be making phone calls to patient's homes every Thursday to "Tuck" them in for the weekend, and make certain that they have enough supplies and medication to get them through the weekend. If they need anything, our team will make sure they get it before the weekend.
This is one of the may ways they ensure patients are taken care of, and let them know how very much they are cared about.

West Nile Virus confirmed in Oklahoma

Oklahoma City — The first case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Oklahoma has been confirmed in a Major County resident. The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) encourages residents to take precautions to reduce the risk of contracting WNV, a mosquito-borne illness.  Summertime typically marks the beginning of the WNV season in Oklahoma, with outdoor activities providing opportunities for encountering infected mosquitoes.

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: One arrested in Monroe morning murder

LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale announced about 12:45 p.m. [July 9] that Richard Roland Humphries, 48, has been arrested o suspicion of first degree murder in connection with the murder of 53-year-old Randy Shelton.
Shelton was shot at his home on Midway Road at about 3:50 a.m. today [July 9], according to police.
Humphries lives across the road from the Shelton home. Investigators still have not released information about the cause of the shooting.

BREAKING NEWS: LeFlore County Sheriff's Office investigates murder of Monroe man

July 9, 2014

LeFlore County Sheriff's Department is investigating the murder of a Monroe man that happened about 3:30 a.m. today [July 9].
According to authorities, someone knocked on the door of the home and began firing a gun through the door. The 53-year-old man's name who was killed has not yet been released by investigators.
The shooting happened at a home east of the Sugarloaf Christian Fellowship Church on Midway Road.
Authorities say the have a person of interest but no arrests had been made as of 7 a.m.
The road remains blocked by deputies as the investigation continues.
